Tailgate

What different models/years of tailgates will fit up to a 1942-47 bed?

I should have specified 1/2 ton. What about gates from 40 and 41 fitting?

I believe the 40-41s are a couple of inches narrower. Do a search through the threads, I think this has come up before.

Thanks MT and loholland. Gary confirmed that the 40-41's fall 3 inches too short. There is one of the earlier gates on e-bay, and I was going to go for it. Next question: Does anyone have a good tailgate to sell. Good meaning straight, not rusted out, and fixable small dents?
Drake's has new ones in town, but they are $350.

I hate to say it but JT up at antiquetrucks4sale probably has several, pretty cheap but he in in Pennsylvania, I don't know if he will ship or not. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems that there are more of the 42-47 Ford trucks along the west coast. There should be a salvage yard somewhere along where you live that might have what you are looking for. Do a search on the net. Gary is probably the most knowledgeable person on the coast, maybe he knows.

Mike, I know of a yard in AZ that has a few '46-'47 1/2 tons, and a couple of laster years, check them out at www.dvap.com, they are in Phoenix. I can't tell you what they charge, but always worth a shot, so much of the AZ stuff is rust free. Another in AZ is Hidden Valley Auto, they might have something there. Also try Memory Lane in Southern Cal, they have a good sized yard www.oldautoparts.com I rememeber reading a few years ago about some yards in Central Cal that showed a few pix of '42-'47 pickups there. Might try running a Google search for them, if they still exist.

That's a very nice condition gate there. Just watch out in that to use on mid '50 and ealier bed the latches would have to be removed and the kind that fit inside the top bed roll would have to be used. That gate is the later style gate with the latches mounted under the top of the roll, not it. If the price stays low enough, it would be worth getting and modifiying for use on the earlier beds.
