efi 460

efi 460
So as of now I have a gt390 in my truck. It runs good but I am looking for some more. I am still debating carbed 460 vs efi 460. I know that the earlier 460's made alot more horsepower than the new efi ones, but I am pretty sure that the smog and stuff on the efi ones really chokes them up. Would it be a good idea to just find an efi 460 donor and build off of that or just run a carbbed 460? Or could I use an early 460 w/ efi? Some more input would be nice thanks.

The EFI 460 heads are different than carbed heads so no you can not swap EFI onto a non EFI motor unless you go with something that's fabricated and not factory.
I have been undecided as well and think I will go with the carb over the EFI. The EFI may get better mileage but I'm not to worried about that because I will be lucky to drive it more than a 1000 miles a year. Plus I have to 66K mile carbed 460 motors and one burnt up 460 EFI motor.
I guess I really don't want to go through all the extra work for the EFI. I don't see a real gain for me and my use.

not sure on the 4 bolt thing, but i have read on here plenty of people who are running the 'RV/tow' cam in their EFI 460's with little to no problem. I think it is important to use the cam that is designed for EFI use though, because the rowdy cams mess with the computers ability to make the appropriate changes.
No first hand experience, just what I have been reading.

To answer the computer mod question it would help to know what your plans are and what the cam specs are. I am no expert but the SD system is very sensitve to cam changes. A loppy cam will not work with out computer mods.
As for 4 bolt 460 blocks you will only find them in the form of SCJ motors and some CJ motors. Nothing else got a 4 bolt block. With that said a stock 460 block can handle a very large HP number and even more if you get an early block like a C8, C9 and a D0 block.
My guess would be if you plan on building a 460 that needs a 4 bolt block then the EFI is not the way to go. The EFI heads would be restrict your HP numbers and so would the SD EFI set up. At this point all after market stuff will be need to support that big of an engine build.
The $1600 parts truck seems to be a good find and the price isn' to bad. I don't think that D60 will bolt under your truck that easy. If you plan on running a front D60 I would get a 78/79 model for ease of bolting in. If the parts truck has a ZF 5-speed then I would snag it up for that price.
