I have done a search on this forum and I haven't found really any clear cut answers about a tank for the rear of a 77 ford F250 highboy. I do know that highboys had the in cab tank which I want to get rid of and place one behind the rear axle. There are different answers to if the 33 gal tank out of a bronco works. Does a bronco tank fit between the frame? Also, I checked out aerotanks.com. Does the 32 gal aux tank for 70-85 trucks part # 1028 work? Has anyone put that in their vehicle? What was the cost?

 

I put the 33 gal Bronco tank under my 76 F100 4x4. It fit between the frame okay, but I am assuming the frames are the same width. I ran some all thread through some square tubing and used big washers to connect the top straps to the skid pan and through the cross members to hold it on. The only real problem is that the overflow neck is to the rear of the filler neck on the tank. It is on the foward side at the gas cap. I just moved it to the rear at the gas cap. I got the tank, skidpan, straps, lockring and sending unit that go with the 33 gal tank from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard. I don't remeber the price. I'll check when I get home on Monday.

 

Well I'm looking at putting a tank in the back of my Highboy also. I've read a lot of threads on this in the past, and trust me... ford hasn't made it easy for us highboy owners to pull the tank out of the cab and put one behind the rear axle. The highboy has a more narrow frame than any other ford truck of those years.... So two choices are left to us.

1. Find a camper special rear tank (good luck)
2. Get creative, have one made, find any other tank that'll fit the measurements of your frame.

I'm using a Bronco 2, 23 gallon fuel tank (early 80s... ex: 84), Oh and I found a plastic tank from JBG.

There have been lots of threads on this topic. There are no simple swaps. You have to be creative if you want a rear tank. Your best bet is to measure the area you want to put the tank in then go to the junkyard and look for something that will fit such as a BroncoII as noted above. Heres a tip: You wont find a tank from a 73-79 Ford truck that will fit.

 

Apparently the Fuel Tank from an Old Mustang/Maverick/Comet will fit in between the frame on Highboys.

 

the bronco II is a good fit, i'd look at jeeps also, they're all rear tanks, but i think they're only 20 gallons if thats an issue...

 

There is thread on here somewhere about using a 73-79 rear mounted tank and turning it sideways. I did that to my 77 F250 Highboy and it seems to work pretty good.

 

I always wondered if a tank from a Chevy/GMC Suburban, Blazer, Jimmy would fit. The GM truck frames tended to be narrower than Ford truck frames.

 

What I did was take the measurements insisde the frame then I went to gas tank online sites, and started looking through their inventory. Gas tank dimensions are listed and then all you have to do is decide if you look for a used one or by one new.

Thanks for the ideas. My initial idea was to just make my own tank out of some diamond plated steel, but I thought if I could get an actual fuel tank that would fit nicely without a whole lot fabrication than I would do that. I would really hate to spend over 200 bucks for a fuel tank, but if that's what it is going to take, than I guess that' what I'll have to do.

 

I turned a 19 gal. stock tank sideways, but now I'm looking at a full size '78-'79 bronco 25.5 gal, tank it measures 21"x31"x12", I have mine mounted just in front of the rear axle

 

suburban tanks also go in without too much trouble, and they're 40 gallons..
