Newbie: Finding Explorer with Tow Package

Newbie here and I am in the market for a 2003-2006 Ford Explorer 4.6L V8 with the tow package.

I have purchased a TT that weighs about 5000# when loaded. I understand that the 2006 has a six speed and 3.55 gears, however 2005 and older have 5 speed with 3.73 gears (with tow package).

Here is my question: Is there away to determine what used Explorers have the tow package. Does OEM class III/IV hitch with 7 pin connector = 3.73 rear gears in 2005 and older Explorers. Most used dealers like carmax do not have the ability to determine of the OEM tow package is installed.

Any help would be excellent.

I'd look for something with a longer wheel base. I've known several people that had Explorers and bought 20 to 25 foot trailers. All of them traded off the Explorer within a couple of months. Seems the trailers like be the boss and the Explorer doesn't have the weight or wheelbase to tell it otherwise.....

I agree with Highboy; by the time you add pax and more gear the Explorer is gonna be marginal for a TV. You should get that TT weighed when it's loaded up ready for the road - you might be well over 5000#.

If you decide to stick with the Explorer:

'02 thru '05 with the 7-pin outlet and 2" receiver hitch have 3.73 LS rear gears (If the '05s came standard with stability and traction control, they won't have LS)

You guy's are absolutely right on. Just cause a truck can, doesn't mean that you should. Being in the towing industry for as long as I have, I really do not see the point in loading up a trailer with all the goodies for an excellent time with family and friends, just to be a statisic because the trailer drove the truck. There are always a whole lot of contributing factors upon leaving your driveway: may I suggest simply putting the odds back in your favor?
Lil truck= Lil trailer
