Squeak(chirping) in 2006 diesel from engine
#17
I have 6.0 03 & just got my truck reflashed with the 06E17 flash and now I have that bird singing noise when coastin or light acceleration, just noticed it tonight when I had my windows down. I read this on issues following the 06E17 reflash... "You should notice an increase in turbo cycling closed/whistling at idle and at stops. This is normal, and is to help keep the variable vanes from sticking".
maybe this is what we are hearing?

Chirping
I have an 06 F350 6.0 7800 miles with that odd "chirping" sound; very simiular to what bnmccoy is saying. I thought at first that I was imagining things, but it's slowly getting louder/more annoying. I can't pin it down, but it sounds like the chirp is on-top/internal to the engine. Maybe the HP Oil Pump for the injectors?? I guess I'll try a stethoscope and start the hunt.

Chirp
I have the same chirp, squeal on my 06. Have 4,400 miles on it and bought it 3 months ago. It happens mostly after hiway and then decel or coast around 900-1000 RPM. I have learned to endure it, but it sounded to me like a bad bearing, some metallic friction or maybe a belt or pulley. I've also heard stuff about the injectors making that noise...

I have an 06' with 4500 mi. on it now. I had the chirp in mine at about 2000 mi. My chirp happened at start up at first and than started to happen while driving like you guys have been experiencing. I took it in to my awesome 6.0 tech(I am not kidding this guy is really good), He checked it out and we found that all the ones on the lot did the same thing. He flashed in the newest software, and it fixed it. I was a little leary with all the horror stories you hear about software updates, but no loss in power or mileage.

There is a TSB for prematurely worn belts or the like, but what about normal belts that chirp?
What TSB's would one reference to see if they will cover it?

dieseldoc: what is the build date on your truck. Mine is 08/05 but my son-in-law's is 01/06; so I would think he has a later flash than I. His dad also has an 06 that does not have the squeak...
I have read the TSB on the whistle; it is for leaking exhaust at the EGR cooler connections to the exhaust.

My son-in-law just had his 06 reflashed this past week and it still has the noise. He had it in the shop complaining of poor fuel mileage; we both are getting worse fuel economy out of our 06's vs. our 04's when they had similiar miles on the trucks.
I just returned from a road trip +400 miles round trip and only got a little over 15 mpg driving 70 mph; the 04 would have been low 17's mpg on same trip.

I just changed my oil from Rotella-T 5W/40 Syn to Delo 15W/40 to test something else. Well, this chirping just now showed up. I can still hear my normal turbo whine and this chirping simultaneously.
And yea, it's really annoying...very, very high pitched. Some folks probably can't even hear it. I like the turbo whine, but this sound is different, yet might still be turbo related. Probably something to do with the HPOP and the oil-controlled VGT.
BTW, it doesn't sound like a belt squeak. This is higher pitched and more electrical/mechanical. Seems to be coming from the turbo/downpipe area.
Any mechanics care to comment? I know my dealer will look at me funny if I try to show him this little problem.

One day to diagnose, two days for parts and one more day for labor, my dealer replaced the serpentine belt and tensioner then pronounced my '06 cured of the chirps. 10 minutes of driving up to operating temp and the chirp returned. U turned back to the dealer and left the truck. Service Manager drove it and confirmed there is indeed a chirp and promised he will fix it. Oh well, at least I have this neat rental Taurus at no charge! I will post again when they pronounce it fixed (again)
