Missed Opportunities

Hey Guys,

I missed a great deal yesterday. I've been keeping my eyes open for an early 50's F1. Found a 51 in the company newsletter, called the guy up yesterday and learned it was a complete, all original truck. He has owned it for 20+ years and parked it a few years back when the fuel pump went bad. He said it had the original flathead V8 rebuilt. So, I'm on my way to check it out last evening when he calls and said it was sold, the first guy to get there bought it. I figured that could happen since he was only asking $1500 and was throwing in a 16ft tandem car hauler. Such is life!

I am dying to get another old truck, but I'm thinking I probably should stick to a late 60s or 70s model since there are more of those around, and I'm more familiar with them.

Anyone else got a good story of 'what could have been'?

Wow thats a bummer. The last truck I bought was a total impulse and one I didnt want to miss out on. I got to work one day and checked ebay. With 3 hours left, wouldnt ya know it in the parts section is a 78 F-250 SuperCab 4x4 Lariat tool box in bed tutone etc. Its also had cab lights which looked factory and was part of the snowfighter package which includes a D60 front. Overall not bad shape but bad motor. I wont it at 751 bucks. The only thing I was bummed about (besides the 170 mile tow home) was it only had a D44. Im glad I didnt pass it up but it sure made me poor for a while.

That stinks Rob! That sounded like quite a deal! Hell, I'd would have bought that, and I'm not even looking for another truck! I'll let you know if I run across anything.

I've been a day late and a dollar short most of my life!

Just looked at a 79 F150 out in Wahoo the other day. Mechanically, it's great, but it's got all the typical rust. I think the guy wants a little much ($2500) and he doesn't want to go any lower. Something will turn up sooner or later.

Well Rob, you may have been bummed about that 51, but where did you find a 74 so clean without all that cancer in the usual places here in this area? Everyone of the 73-79's I've seen (unless it's been restored) has some rust over the fendwells, and some in the cab corners/rockers. I'm sure you could make that 390 scream.

Jake

Dial-up sucks. It's taken me 45 to upload 4 pics into my gallery......

The pictures show the truck a little nicer than it really is. There is some rust starting over the wheel wells. Also the bottom rear of the cab. I am hoping to get it into a good body shop and get those areas taken care of. I don't have a clue about body repair.

Jake,

Great meeting up with you in Kearney the other night... By the way, you are much taller in person than on-line!

Oh come on Rob, I'm only about 6'4"!!!! It was good to meet you, and put a face to a name. I know what you mean about pictures making it look better than it already is. That's how it is with my white pickup, you don't see all the small dents and scratches......now blue is just too far gone to ever look good

Rob I was just browsing in the Sunday World Herold from July 23rd and I just spotted a 1951 Ford F3 Pick-up for $350 cash.

The ad states
Ford '51 F3 Truck
Restorable Stored 30 years.
Telephone number
402-274-5373

Thanks for the tip Vince! Since I just bought the supercab, I'll probably pass on another one for now. The wife is already ticked that I've got an old truck in the garage! (You would think she'd be used to it by now!). I can just see her expression when she gets home and finds an F3 in her garage spot...

I keep telling her I need a nice big shop in the back yard.

Nope, the 74 supercab is the only truck in the garage now. I missed out on an F1 a few weeks ago, before I found the 74.

Yes, they are quite nice. Our shop is darn big and has just about any tool you might need. If we don't have in our shop we go to my grandpa's 3 miles away, and he has it

I've been trying to find some land to build a house on, enough to build a 40x60 shop. I just need about three acres that won't cost me a million dollars!

Good luck with that Pat. The property taxes here in NE are unreal. We are paying more taxes for our little 1500 sq. ft. ranch on a city lot than the 2x bigger house on 3 acres we sold in Montana. We've looked a bit at houses over in the Glenwood, IA area. The taxes are a little less, but then we'd both be commuting all the time.
