Loud Whining on cold start up

I have a 1999 F150 with the 4.2 V6 and when I start it up cold when it idles high it makes a loud whining noise but when it idles down the noise quits. What could be making this noise and help would be greatly appreciated

Don't make the wife go out and start it for ya in the morning!

It could be a lot of things, including the power steering pump... A real nice tool to have for situations like this is a mechanics stethascope.

I saw one at Harbor Frieght, but was buying a dial readout caliper that day.

Sounds like the fan clutch (radiator fan).
Seems a few guys here over the years have had that problem.
I believe it is a viscous coupled clutch but can not swear to it.

You can repalce the entire assembly in the driveway.

And yes, a mechanic's stethascope is good for isolating such noises.
