Unhappy Rear Window Leaking

I recently got a 99' F-150 XLT Supercab Flareside Sport 4x4. I love this thing to death. I looked for months and jumped on thi one. She's got the 4.6 triton with 77,000 miles. I noticed when it rains, water drips through the rear sliding window. I looked but can't see wear it comes from. My brother (had a 97') said his did that too, and its a bitch to repair. He said just dont put anythign back there. SO WHATS THE POINT OF THE EXTRA CAB? Anyone have similar problems or know how to fix this leaky mess. I assume its been doing it a while there is a musty smell hanging in the truck. -Joe

Leak

1st thing to check is the seal around the 3rd or highmount stoplight.I have seen a few of those leak through the headliner and down the inside of the rear glass.

Had a leak on my 04 SCREW. It was the gasket on third back up light. The dealership replaced the entire light because they said they couldn't get only the gasket. Anyway no more problems.

On the "older" trucks, it's the window gasket.

Proper repair involves removing the slider and either replacing it (new one comes with a seal) or repairing the seal.

Of course, removing the rear window means removing a LOT of the truck's interior.

Water leak

I have a 98 XLT but without the slider. That would narrow it down to the 3rd break light or the window seal. A glass repair shop couldn't find a problem with the window seal, so that leaves the light?

Same problem here. Mine looks like the gasket around the glass has become seperated at the corners. Mebbe a little silicone will do the trick.

There is a tsb on this problem. Basically you have to replace the whole rear window. Took me about 6 hours. I paid about $260 for the window assembly and $20 for the sealant. Good Luck.

Well i washed it last night and took a better look. It looks like the whole gasket around the window is loose and/or falling off. I was hoping I could just replace this gasket instead of the whole frigging window.....NO?

Get some black silicone for $10 a bottle...go NEATLY around the whole window and 3rd brake light! Had the same prob back seat completely wet on drivers side ex-cab...silicone did the trick...no leak for a yr now! Sure as heck beats replacing the whole window etc!

Does the black silicone look ok around the window? I can't afford to replace the rear window but also could really do without water leaking in every time it rains. Would putting silicone on the inside work? that way with all the trim replaced the silicone would be hidden from view.

Just be NEAT with it...run your finger with the tip of the gun so it smoothes it out! I went around the gray plastic windown trim against the body of the truck. I DID not go around the small 1/4" gap between the plastic trim and window! Only around the plastic trim against the body of the truck. As well as I went around the complete 3rd brake light filling in all gaps and grooves. For $10 the prob fixed...of course if you look closely you can see the silicone, but who cares (I dont) considering it saved me a bunch of money!
