Exclamation 96 F350 4x4 front axle leaking-can I pull from outside?

Here is the rub; while looking around yesterday trying to figure out why 4wd isn't engaging, I noticed the right side axle is leaking just inside (toward diff) from the CV (axle U joint). My mechanic neighbor looked and said he is 95% sure that this model axle comes right out once you remove the spindle and the seal can be accessed easily. I took it to two shops to get estimates since I'm short on time and leaving for the lake Saturday. Both said "nope, it's locked in and the seal is on the inside so the diffs gotta come out". Yikes! That's going to cost me and I'm short on $$$ - I'm married .

Anyone out there know one way or another. Can I just pull the axle when I do the hubs and replace the seal (and bearings while I'm there). My truck is a 1996 F350 LWB CC 4x4 with auto hubs (for now) and a 460.

I will be replacing the auto hubs with Warn Premium manuals if my neighbor can find the socket he has. Otherwise I will just buy or rent one.

Thanks.

My 95 F350 front axle leaks on the drivers side have been putting off changing the seal. You can get the axles out but the only way to change the seal is to remove the front diff. And while your in there you might as well change them both by the time you tear the frontend apart changing another seal isnt going to be a big deal. Unless it is leaking badly just keep an eye on the fluid level until you can afford to get it done. A quart of 80w90 isnt to expensive

Thanks John. That's what a local ford repair shop said too! He told me to put the warn manual hubs on and run it in 4wd and see if it lubes it up and stops leaking before I tear into it.

Yeah its worth a try I have got Warn manuals on mine been on there since I bought the truck never had a problem. My axle seal leaks just a little never have seen it drip just enough on the outside to make the dust stick to it. I figure the next time I need to repack wheel bearings will be time to replace the seals
