Valve seals

Howdy all!

Well, I'm getting ready to replace the umbrella style valve stem seals on a 360 and came up with a question. Is there anything that keeps the seal down on the head? As the valve goes up and down, there seems to be the possibility that the seal will move up the stem and have less sealing capability. Is this okay or should there be something more on there?

This style of seal is all there is on this motor and I have not seen enough to know if this is correct or not.

thanks,
Jeremy

Valve umbrellas will float up against the retainer cup and still deflect oil away from the valve guide, this is normal. The biggest problem with the use of rubber umbrellas they become hard and brittle, turn to crumbs and plug up the oil return passages and end up in the pan.

That is no joke when they get brittle they will plug up the oil screen just went through that process about six months ago. Got lucky though did not have to pull the heads off te get them changed.
