'01 Ranger 4 cyl EGR question

I've searched this forum and found out all kinds of things about these EGR valves but havn't seen this addressed.
A friends '01 4 cylinder, 5-speed, won't pass the OBD II "ready" test (for emissions inspection) because the ( now, this is quoted from the Ford dealers invoice) "EGR monitor will not set ready" despite being driven over 100 miles to complete the drive cycles. The Ford dealer doesn't even seem to know what to do about it. I've read what a P.I.T.A. the EGR valve is to change .... don't want to go there if I don't have to. Any suggestions? It's BAD to have to get a DMV waiver for an '01 with only 69K miles!

Every OBD-II monitor has a certain routine that needs to be run through in order for it to execute and be deemed "ready". It's a part of the so-called "drive cycle":

No I have never looked at the Ranger Forum.
I am not up on Emission Testing as we do not have Emission Testing or Vehicle Safety Inspections in Kansas.

I can not give you the details on the EGR Monitor in the PCM but would think they would be similar to the IDM Monitor and I can give you an URL to read about it.

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4661778.html

I know that 50% of the PCMs that are changed out that there is nothing wrong with them but when you do not know what else to do, what else can you do.

I take it you have read the other URL link above so I will not cover it.

Good Luck
Bill

FWIW, Ford does not use the type of IDM monitor described in that link, at least not on vehicles equipped with DIS/EDIS ignitions.

There is some very good technical info on 2001 Ford Emission & Fuel System Monitoring here:

Thank you very much for the link.

After looking at this diagram I think I would look at the DPFE Sensor and make sure its hoses are open and the exhaust tubing to the EGR Valve is clean.

Of course any of the other items in the diagram could upset the apple cart also.

Have you run across any links to a full schematic for the PCM?
The only one I can find is very old and for an ECM or EEC and not even close to what is in any of the PCMs that I have opened.
Thanks
Bill

Thanks, I'll start there.
He gave me another paper with a DTC of P1537. Had hand written on it "IMRC Bank 1 Stuck Open"
My online Ford connection doesn't list that code.?????

Found that to be "Intake Manifold Runner Control".
Reckon that would cause the EGR monitor to not set?

I don't have the truck here to look at ..........

The Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) is a system which uses dual intake runners to supply air to each cylinder. The secondary runners are normally closed, but the PCM opens them under high rpm conditions when the driver is demanding additional power from the engine. The IMRC system can be actuated using a single electric motor or dual vacuum motors. The IMRC system is functionally checked by monitoring the runner control plates using switches. If the actual position of the runner control plates does not match the commanded position, a malfunction of the IMRC system is indicated.

IMRC System Check Operation:
DTCs P1516 - IMRC input switch electrical check, Bank 1
P1517 - IMRC input switch electrical check, Bank 2
P1520 - IMRC output electrical check
P1518 - IMRC stuck open, electric operated
P1537 – IMRC stuck open, vacuum operated, Bank 1
P1538 – IMRC stuck open, vacuum operated, Bank 2

Monitor execution continuous
Monitor Sequence None
Sensors OK
Monitoring Duration 5 seconds
Typical IMRC functional check malfunction thresholds

IMRC plates do not match commanded position (functional)
IMRC switches open/shorted (electrical)

I would not think so but not sure.

If they did not get any DTCs for the EGR I do not know how they can say "EGR monitor will not set ready".

Sounds like it did not pass and they did not know what to say.

Check the runner control plates to see if they are stuck or moving when commanded to do so and if the switch that checks there position is sending the signal that they are open.

Get this fixed and see if it will pass.

(P1537 stored code) I got the truck for a bit this afternoon. I removed the vacuum line from the IMRC to the manifold and it was holding vacuum when I removed it. I put a piece of hose on the manifold fitting and drew a vacuum and released it several times. The only thing I heard was the vacuum release, nothing else like anything opening and/or closing. Should you be able to hear the control plates open/close?
Thanks for the help as I'm just trying to help an elderly friend and this is all new to me.
Steve

He's getting a waiver from the DMV tomorrow. Having to do that is ridiculous on an '01 Ford!
Ford dealer says a new EGR valve MIGHT fix it ...... to the tune of $400+! For that money I don't think "might" should be in their vocabulary!

Question: If the waiver is granted and the thing somehow gets fixed (like for example, the EGR monitor suddenly decides to cooperate), then what happens with DMV?

The waiver is good for a year only. Next year you have to spend that magic $$$, somethin like $250, all over again to get another.

....and I believe I was messing with the swirl control actuator ....duh! Guess I'll take another look for the IMRC.

I just loved my 88 2.9 Ranger but this '01 is using up way too many brain cells!
