97 oil pressure

97 powerstroke and i know in fords their guages are suppost to be in th same spot regardless of readings..( chevys have a range for oil pressure....battery charge...etc. fords are just in one spot and as long as pressure is there. it stays in that one spot. it's the type of guage it is i remember..but i forgot what it was called. ANYWAYS- the oil pressur eguage just started flickering slightly. on th eolder trucks like this it just says normal between the L and the H..on th enormal teh needle is fluctuating between the R and the M...and when i get into it..(throttle) it sinks down towars the low..one time i had it to the O. i know this is a hard way to describe this, but it's all i could think of to describe it. So im wondering if i've got a seriosu problem here?..or is it just maybe a malfunctioning guage or sending unit. is ther any way to manually hook up a guage and check oil pressure. if so where at?

any recommendations or help is appreciated.

thanks

yeah you are correct about the oil gauge just going to the same spot all the time once it gets pressure. there is a mod for the 94.5-96 trucks to make it work normal but not the 97's.

to hook up a new gauge you can tap into the top of the hpop where the sending unit currently is or the hex plug hole.
or there is also a spot down by the oil filter.

probably the most accurate spot is the hpop reservoir though.

the hpop reservoir is on the front of the motor, all the way up at the top. has a sending unit coming out of it and a hex plug.

yes you can plumb up a new gauge there.

so once i get this done--what reading should i be looking for? low (0-70psi range) or high (1500-3000psi range) because it's hooked to the high pressure pump itself?

You will be reading 0-70. It measures the oil pressure feeding the hpop.
