Might be the first at your local track, but its already been done. There is a guy in southern Florida named Bill running an Explorer called Troll.
www.speedfreak.cc
He pretty much has the toughest X running right now, and he is almost done with the new engine (347, twin turbos, etc). He was pushing 750 horses before - should be well over 850 on the engine alone when its back.
I've got a few things left to do on mine and I'll be at the track for a night just to get a baseline number, but my spare time has run thin and I don't have time to go anymore...

Where do you find this stuff Cobra and why are people trying to push a family car to track records? Your supercharger is cool too and all but really, my 360 Durango is plenty for the street. My 4.0 Explorer does fine in low gear off road. If you want to build a bracket car, start with a stripped down frame. Just wonder what the point to all this is I guess?

It has run a best of 15.3 in the 1/4 at 90mph. Not to shabby for a 4200lb truck.
No governor so it tops out at around 128 mph, though I rarely if ever go above 90.

I can't answer for Ben, but for me the reason for building an Explorer over anything else is that I want something different. Everyone and their brother build Mustangs, Camaros, etc. I've never been someone to do as everyone else and have always enjoyed having something different. Is an Explorer the best vehicle to choose for racing - of course not. But why not be different. My setup is not built for track running, its built for everyday power and being able to tow what I want. I have enough room to get the friends in it along with all our gear in the back and hook up to the boat and go to the lake. My Explorer was fine for the street before I ever touched it also, but now it is even better and does a lot more of the things I need it for, plus looks good and performs (if I might brag a little ). I guess it always comes down to the old saying - "To each is own"...
