Considering purchasing a '99 F-150 4x4, questions...
I found a 1999 F-150 with the 5.4L engine 4x4 Club cab.
Price was about ~12 grand. I'm looking for something to replace my Ranger before this coming winter. The one wheel wonder deal sucks driving 72+ miles for work.
Any things I should look for while test driving, looking over, etc, etc?
Thanks a bunch.

I have a 99 F-150 4x4 SCab 5.4L with 160K on the clock. I haven't had any issues except normal replacement parts (ie: tires, brakes). The only major replacements have been IAC, DPFE and alternator and even those weren't that bad. I drive 60 miles round trip to work and average 15.5mpg. This truck has been a real work horse and has treated me well. I wouldn't hesitate getting another one just like it. Just my $.02 worth

Check for an oil leak on the passenger side headgasket, '99s are known for that. My '99 F-150 has the oil leak and its not a big deal, but the oil drips on the exhaust mainifold so the truck smells like burnt oil a lot of the time.
Ive got 138,800 miles on my '99 F-150 and its been a pretty good truck. Over the past 5 years Ive had to replace 1 igniton coil, 1 serpentine belt, 1 set of headlight bumps, 3 sets of brake pads (mostly cause by warped rotors), 1 set of rotors and 1 muffler (replaced under warranty by Flowmaster). As you can see, its been mostly what you would call "regular maintenance". All things considered, I cant complain.

well I am also looking at purchasing a 99 f150 sc 4x4 lariat with 99,500. Looks very clean and tires are about 1/2 to 1/3 tread and 17" rims. I will look for the oil leak on passenger side next time i look at it. I drive 60 miles round trip to work and back mostly pavement but 4 miles gravel. I also farm and hunt and was wondering what you guys use for tires and how good they last. I have used wild counrty txr's bfg mt and usually only get 15,000 miles max per set of tires. I'll admit i don't drive easy. any help would be great.

My '99 4x4 SC 5.4 had the head gasket leak. Please keep in mind, to repair it, it's not just a gasket, but possibly the head or even both heads. The driver side head tended to leak on the valley side near the alternator. There was a mill defect in the passenger head that caused the leak and head has to be replaced. I haven't heard of too many people that successfully honed it. I've heard the cost to repair ranging from $2k-$5k. I was lucky, the dealer I bought the truck from paid for the repair as part of the deal. Here are some other things to check:
1. the driver's door at the lower right corner of the door glass (looking from
outside the truck). The sheetmetal tended to crack there.
2. If it has a sliding rear window, it tended to leak. You might be able to see
any water stains on the inside of the cab. Also the sliding glass frame
would crack.
3. Check the normal things you check for on a used vehicle. At 63k miles,
there shouldn't be much wrong. Maybe brakes, exhaust, belts, the normal
maintenance items.
Good luck!

My 99 F-150 4x4 SCab 5.4L has had the following problems. The sheetmetal on the doors cracking at the bottom of the windows (both sides), one COP (coil-on-plug) went out and had to be replaced, ball joints needed to be replaced, and just this week it seems that I may have the same head gasket leak. I run Nitto Terra Grappler All-Terrains in the LT295 75R16's. They are huge but they make the truck look great. I turned the torsion bars up just a tad to clear the front air dam when turning. Another thing to look for - if it's a 4x4 and it has the off road package, it will have a limited slip in the rear. When you drive it, pull up to a stop sign, and from a stop, take a turn slowly. If you feel a small vibration as you turn, the clutches in the limited slip are probably shot. It's not a big deal, just means that your limited slip doesn't really work anymore, but it will still drive fine - you may just get stuck a little easier. Hope this helps.
