Trading 7.3L for V10

My 7.3L is in the shop again and I am going to try and get a new truck. It would be silly to not spend the $600 (5.4 vs. 6.8) for the two extra cylinders.

My Excursion w/ 7.3L got avd 14 mpg empty. 7-9 towing 9K-10K lbs.

What should I know about the V10. I am looking at an F250. Should I look for 4.10 or go with the 3.73?

This will be the wifes daily driver, and figure the 3.73 will be fine, but is the 4.10 will not hurt the everday mileage and save while towing why not.

If there is anything I should know, spell it out for me.

Thanks,
D

I would go with 4.10 or 4.30's. I have an '04 with 3.73 and wish I had ordered my instead of buying off the lot. Many people on the boards will say the mileage difference is minimal with the higher ratios.

You will be happy with the V10, I know I am and so are many others....

If you are buying a new(er) 2005+ model, then your gear options are 4.10 or 4.30. Not enough difference between the two to really matter IMO.

If you are buying an older '99-'04 model, then the gear options are 3.73 or 4.30. I'd really look for a truck with the 4.30 gears for towing.

I'm looking at the 2006 models.

What will be the difference in the V10 vs. Diesel.

If you will be towing more than 40% of the time with 8000lbs +...then IMHO go with the 4.30s. If not, then the 4.10s will be fine...for your needs.

The newer V10 3v is a BEAST of a motor...and probably FORDs best ever in a gas truck engine. You should expect with a light foot about 12mpg combined city/highway empty driving. While towing...you should see 7-9mpg...and all depends I suppose on what and lbs you will be towing. This engine loves the 3000-4800 rpms while towing. (heck anytime really ). Much different than the fine 7.3L you will be replacing.

If you order (hard to find a V10 on the lot these days), then you will certainly be happy.

On Edit: Just noticed you are looking at the '06 models. Good luck finding one. If you do...BUY it quickly...as the only NEW V10 (if not on the lot) is an '07...and that depends on where you live.
Good luck...

biz

finding a 06 with a v10 will be hard .ordering a 07 with a v10 in cali is forget it for 07 as are the other states with green tree laws. as to towing many of our guys have the 410's on thier 05 and don't have any problem. those with 430's say it's a bear something i have to back up fully as i ordered mine with 10 and have regeared to 56's un freaking real.
biz said it the 3 valve motor is super strong. and tows like a bear, mpgs are close to what you now get. if you have to go diesel the 06 6.0 has the bugs out you should be fine other then paying off the 6k for the motor.

You were right. Two dealers tonight. Neither had a F250 w/ V10.

Might end up in a used 6.0L w/ 11K mi. I guess that wouldnt be so bad.

I loved my 7.3 as I am sure you did... there a lots of good reasons to have a diesel.

For your money I can not think of any reasons to get a 6.0L over a 3v V10 just because you are in a hurry

Many of us..(probably MOST) came into V10 ownership from the diesel.

The 6.0L is being replaced with a new 6.4L in 08 (2003 to 2008 is not a long run for a motor)

The 3v V10 with 4.30:1 will do anything a PSD can do and do it significantly cheaper and quieter

Unfortunatly being in NoCal you are in a clean air state that has restrictions on getting a 07 with the V10

We have several threads on getting new V10 trucks and hints about getting around the restrictions.

Damone, as you can see from my signature I traded my 7.3 for V10. I was initially looking at buy a used '03 v10. After finding this forum, and taking the recommendations of the folks here, I purchased on '05 V10 and have not regretted that decision for one moment. The V10 pulls my 11000# 5th wheel like a dream.

I traded a Dodge CUmmins for my 2006 V10 F250....best move I could have made...hated the diesel and love the V10.

I have a 8000# 5ER, AND IT PULLS JUST FINE...

I had a 2000 F-250 with a 7.3 and it was a great truck.I sold it to a friend, made some decent money off it,so I needed a truck.I was terrified to buy a 6.0 because of all the bad things I'd heard.I started researching the new V-10's especially from this forum and I made up my mind I was going to get one.I found one V-10 in an 800 mile radius and it was exactly the truck I wanted 05 F-350 supercab,I couldn't believe it,it was 30 miles from my house.I'm amazed how much I enjoy this truck,I tow a boat which is around 10000 lbs on the trailer and it does it with no sweat,it's my daily driver,no smell,no noise, smooth as silk.If you can find a V-10 buy it,you and your wife will be very happy.

Only V10 I could find was a 2003 (2valve 310 HP). It only had 30K mi on it, and price was right. With the negative equity I still woulda dropped in payment. Too bad the old man was a cigar smoker.

Ended up in a 2006 F150 screw 6.5' box. My Toy Hauler is up for sale now that I can put my bike in the box. Looking for a smaller TT.

I tried to get into a 04 6.0L, but your voices in my head. Those voices and the little tug in the tranny made me look elsewhere.

Got in the zippy (in comparison to the 7.3L) 5.4L 300 HP 360 Ft-Lb.

Wife loves me again, it's her daily driver. She said I love it, no smell, not noisy, and got a gittyup.

I think I will end up with the same mileage towing as the 7.3L (7 mpg).

good luck man but don't think that little 5.4 will get that poor a mpg towing it just might show you wrong and 9 or 10 maybe a touch more.
it's not a bad combo in a 150 for pounds to h.p.
again besy wishes with the new ride and no wifeie problems

Thanks guys.

I had a 03' 5.4L (260HP - Expedition) and it got 7 mpg towing. If I get 9 or 10 I will be ecstatic.

Keep On Truckin.
