How big of a boat can you legally tow with a Grand Cherokee in Missouri and Iowa?

My inlaws are supposed to pick-up there new 21' Cobalt ski boat next week-end in the Ozarks and pull it back to Iowa City. They have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a V-6 and the boat's dry weight is ~ 4000 lbs plus the trailer and gear. What are the legalities for Missouri on tow vehicle weight vs trailer weight and combined weight? I know the trailer has only surge brakes.

Thanks

I am starting a new job and don't want to take time off to go get it with our truck, unless I have too.

it would be what ever the max tow weight is on the jeep. all states have a max length that can be towed but a V6 grand cherokee would not have anywhere near the towing capacity to exceed that.

V6 or the 4.0L I6? The 4.0L can take quite a bit of abuse.

What the state says you can tow, and what your vehicle says you can tow, are two different things. The guy in front of me was licensing his truck as a car (allowed, but no towing, and questionable as to what you can get away with in the bed (how high, etc)). I was asked about truck plates, and the guy then just handed me the 12,000 pound tags (noticed when I paid, kept because funny). I have a Ranger with the 5 speed and a 2.3, LOL.

Enter vehicle info at http://www.trailerboats.com/towrating/ to get tow limits.

Thanks for the replies. I think they can pull it, I am concerned with wether the Cherokee would stop it. My father-in-law drives real slow and is overly carefull, so he should get along okay. The other issue is pulling it out of the water, but I guess we will find out when they get it back to Iowa.

In MO you can probly get away with it as long you are not pulled over for another reason or have an accident. If they have a reason to pull you over and you don't have truck tags they could fine you. That is how i understand the plate laws here in MO. That is if they have MO tags.

With the tow package, that can handle 5000lbs. Without, only 2000lbs. That boat might be pushing it.

Legally you can tow it. The Jeep will pull it safely. The manufacturer might not recommend it. The DRIVER might not have the skills to do it.
