06 F350 V10
I am looking at an 03 350 2x4 single wheel with the V10 and automatic. (would rather have the 6 speed tho) What kind of mileage can be expected with no trailer and maybe 500 lbs of payload? I know when towing the mileage will go way down to around 9-10 mpg with 6-10K behind the hitch. The price on this truck is almost too good to pass up at 23K brand new.
Is there a good aftermarket for the V10? How about long term reilability. I have a 95 E350 with the 460 and it has been and still is a great motor at 178K. Is the V10 going to be as reliable? Thanks!

Hi Liberty03,
Just so you dont have too much of an expectation on the milage, don t expect much over 10 MPG as an average (no trailer) , maybe a little more for highway. I know there are many guys who report seeing up to 14 MPG, but for purchasing purposes stick with 10 - 11 MPG. Anything better than that will be a bonus.
As you will see from all the posts in this forum, the V10 is a good solid motor.
Mods for this engine are very limited, certainly not like your 460.
Reliability seems to be very good with many owners well over 100k with no problems.
If the price is right I doubt you will regret your decision, unless gas keeps going up, in which case I'm going to swap my V10 for a 4 cyl. cummins !!!!

No, Charlie, I can't go with you there. I'm glad you get the mileage you do, but frankly I'm with HeavyIron. No load, commuting to work, I've gotten 10 mpg for over a year, except I get 9 in winter. And you know I'm no troll, just telling it like it is.
Of course in Minnesota we use 10% ethanol, and my driving is only about 10 miles out and back wherever I go. In fact, I'm excited that my last tank was 11, hopefully due to my hiting that 150 hour mark. We'll see.

No, I'm no troll either. I own and know of 6 V10's currently that with city driving, no load, get 10 MPG average, mine included and I drive very conservatively (75 miles a day average).
If the 05' is that much better then great for you guys. Even with 3 valves, the greater Hp output has to come from somewhere, so I think 14 MPG is highly unlikely for the "general" population, and I believe Cap that your '05 is not stock ???
As to the Cummins comment, I meant (tongue in cheek) converting my F350 to a 4 cyl cummins. Heaven forbid I would buy a Dodge.

I just bought an '06 V10 that has about 1200 miles on it now so I havn't even bother to check gas milage yet as it's still tight. I'm expecting between 10 & 14 MPG empty. I have a '93 F250 that I've never gotten more than 14 MPG with & once had a '79 4X2 1 ton dodge with a 360 that never got more than 12MPG. The Dodge fell apart after about 70K miles. The F250 has 90K & still runs great. The new truck is twice the truck of the other two with way more power so gas milage is not my primary concern.
