Hood Fitment Again

Does anyone out there have a stock hood on their 56' F-100 that fits? And if so, is it possible to maybe get some measurements of the hinge like from the back edge of hinge to truck and maybe the amount of hinge sticking up above the sheetmetal. I have the hood off and have new hinges and would like to have the hinges as close as possible when I install the hood. ( It is a new 55' hood and was never fastened to the truck so I don't know where to start) Thanks, Jack

??? Unless someone has buggered up the mounting holes there is only one place the hinges go on the cowl and the hood, so you can't get it wrong. Make sure you have the correct hinge to hood bolts for the year hinges you are using. The 56 used larger diameter shoulder bolts. There should also be a wavy washer under the head of each shoulder bolt. The shoulder bolts are installed just snug and safety wired to keep them from backing out. If the hood threads are stripped from overtightening you can buy oversized shoulder bolts from Mid Fifty. Check the hinge pix in my "extras" gallery for the pivot that is often stiff or frozen, be sure it is free and greased.

The threads are the same for 53/56 hoods just the 56 hinge has larger holes which required a larger shoulder on the bolts. If you have the stock setup for mounting the hinge to the cowl you will have four odd shaped spacer/washers which may or maynot help with the hinge spacing. When I had the stock hinges I had to enlarge the hinge mounting holes to help get the hood spaced somewhat correct.

Good luck

Thumbs up

I have a '56 I bought last year with a hood that closes and fits properly.
I removed the hinges one at a time, cleaned them and checked for some of the hints/techniques that Axracer suggested in his extras/hinge gallery pics and they were very helpful in getting it to operate properly. I still need to rework my '53's hood yet, but it can be done.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I wasn't too clear though. I meant mounting the hinges in the four holes of the truck before attaching the hood. There is quite a lot of play in the four mounting holes. I have already set the hood on the cowl etc without the hinges and it fits fine but when I attach the hood, to the hinges and try to close it, its another story. I just want a good starting point to mount the hinges to the truck before attaching the hood. The hood is new to this truck because the other hood that was on it had louvers in it and I wanted a stock looking hood so I traded for the 55' hood.

First make sure you have the hinges on the correct sides, they are stamped L&R. Did you take the springs off the hinges and check the pivots like I recommended? If not do it now, if that hidden pivot is not free the hood will never fit properly. The front of the hinges should be parallel to the front edge of the cowl. You can leave the mounting bolts slightly loose and close the hood, adjust the fit and tighten the bolts that are acessed from inside the cab. Open the hood and tighten the other two on each side. That will get you closer than any measurement will.
If you do a search on hood fitting, hood closing, front clip adjustment, hood hinges, etc. you'll find some lengthy discussions on getting everything fitting.

Thanks, axracer, you would think that new hinges would be free but I will check them out anyway. Jack
