Timing for 82 302, punched out .040

I've got an 82 f150, thats going to be apart for a while this summer. I think the timing's off, because its getting horrible gas milage (8ish), pops through the carb occasionally, and its a dog (cant burn out... C6, 3.00 gears)

Anybody know what the timing should be on it? There's a mark on the crankshaft pully, at 8 degrees... I guess my Dad (may he rest in peace) liked to play with the timing, and see where it ran the best. I'm just worried about it being wrong, compleatly...

Anybody know how many c/u a 302 has, after being bored 40 thousanths?
J/w

Thanks alot
~Nate

Hey Nathane- Cubic Inches=No. of Cylinders x 0.7854 x bore x bore x stroke.
8 x .7854 x 4.040 x 4.040 x 3.000= 307.655.
As far as being a dog, I feel your pain. The C6 is a great tranny, but a real power drain, coupled with the 3.00 GR and the 302. Try backing the timing up to 10*ATDC and see if it doesn't make a difference.
I'm in the middle of a build on my C6/ 2.73 GR/ 302 to get a little more fun out of it-
8 x .7854 x 4.060 x 4.060 x 3.40= 352.137 c.i.
Who says you have to change blocks to have a 351? Pete

this is a carbed setup so be careful when going that hi with the timing. make sure all of your vacum lines are connected properly and are not cracked and leaking. maybe tune up the carb and throw some fresh plugs and wires but be sure to use basic autolites none of that fancy platinum. 6-8 btdc sounds right with the vacum advance plugged. if need be hook a vacum gauge up and time till its at its peak then back off just slightly and you should be set. 8mpg with your setup though is probably about right

Kemical I disagree..
I had a '78 LWB F100 with a 302/c4/3:00 gears that would get 20 MPG highway all day long, dead stock and single exhaust.

Nate-Definitely check your hoses for leaks, try 12 deg BTDC I run my 351w at 10 with no problems whatsoever, it likes it there. A 302 bored 30 thou is a 306, so I would guess 308 or so for 40 thou

Dammit

8mpg in town, and thats all I do with it.

its a 4WD truck, but I dont use it.

It's kinda sentimental, but I thought the reason I was getting crappy milage was because the timing's off, and the vaccume's effed up.

I'll disconnect the non functional, aftermarket, vaccume controled cruise control... Then I'll see what that gives me, for g/m and vaccume increases (its got a gadge in the dash, it's at 20" of mercury at idle, when warm)

I guess I can say screw the cab replacement... I'll have to keep up with gas replacement untill it rots out from under me (or i crash it, intentionally or otherwise)

Anybody know the gear ratio differences between a C6 and a C4 trans?

Ringo, was yours a longbed 4x4? I'm not sure on the weight differnces between a f100 and f150, but I'd kill for 20mpg in this rig.

tks alot, sorry for the flood of unrelated questions

Nope, Nate it was a 2wd
Didn't realize yours was a 4x I am sure that will lose you 5-8 MPG right off the bat

Pete
Set it at 12 degrees ATDC and it won't even start. THAT's retarded. I sincerely hope you made a misprint here. Should be 12 degrees Before Top Dead Center BTDC.

8 mpg for a 4wd in town sounds about normal for a 302, trying to lug around a heavy *** 4wd , backed with a C6. Set it to 12-14 degrees and you'll probably pick up a couple mpg. Certainly ain't gonna get 20 mpg.

Yep. I re-read my post a little later that night, and called myself a dumb***. I gotta quit posting so late. Thanks for the correction.

You need to check and see what the total timing is also. With your timing light hooked up, rev it up to about 3 grand and see if the timing moves smoothly up to about 32-40 degrees. If not and it's staying around your base timing of 10-12, you're not getting any timing advance...thus the messed up vacuum lines and such. You can tell if it's a bad vacuum advance pod by applying vacuum to it via a handheld vacuum pump and see if it advances then. If not you might as well invest in a rebuilt distributor with new advance pod and all.
