Rear End Clunk

Rear End Clunk
I have a 1999 F-150 4x4 with the 4.2L engine. There is a clunking noise coming from the rear end when I drive over bumps or un-even terrain. I jacked up the rear of the truck and discovered there is about an 1/8 inch of end play at each wheel. I believe the axle is the 8.8. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is this normal?
Thanks,
Brad

You should get under the back end with the truck on the ground and then grab on to the driveshaft around each connection point (trans and diff) and see if either end has any play in it. If it does, you might need new U-joints. That would be a easy place to start. Might also want to look over your back suspension if you have not already. Give each connection point and the leafsprings a look. Who knows, you might find something visibly wrong.
