Can I ask why you would want to go smaller?

Cheaper tires.

I do believe you can though. But only on the Heritage models. The newer 04+ model can't for sure. Hopefully someone can confirm this.

285's on both 16 and 17's are the same price, or at least from the shop I ordered from, still doesn't justify the cost of purchasing the smaller rims.

16in is the standard size, 17s and larger were optional or part of an upgrade/special edition.

I have a 99 F 150 4X4 that came with 17 inch wheels . I had a spare set of 16 inch wheels which I mounted some mud tires, that I run during hunting season. My truck has rear disc and these wheels work fine.

He "possibly" might want to go 16" rims and go with larger tires...easier and cheaper to find oversized tires for 16s. YES, you can put 16s on your truck even if you stay with stock tires...but as stated above, if your staying stock tires...I would leave your 17s on, they LOOK MUCH BETTER!
