4x4 Hub question

G'Day all,

I am looking to upgrade from a 4x2 B3000 to a 4x4 Ranger/B-Series. However, I have heard a "rumor" about the hubs on them.

The gist of it is that they need replacing around 60k to 100k km. The bearings end up going bad inside, and it is a $700-a-side fix.

What can you guys tell me?

Thanks....

(I apologize if this is already posted somewhere else, just shoot me the link if so...)

The splines actually brake out of them. That's when you're looking at 700 per side and that's if you go OEM. The real ticket is to go with some manual hubs from Warn. For less then $200 you can convert your hubs to manual locking and you know they aren't going to just snap on you then. The only down side is if you think you'll need them you have to go out and turn a dial on them but you can still stay out of 4x4 untill you engage the transfer case. Not a big deal to me because I won't mind locking them when I think I need them. I wanted to stay fully auto but I'm going to be running too much torque to play that game.

No. The "problem" hubs were only '98 to mid-'01. They went to a different system in mid-'01 that's supposed to be better.

There are no locking hubs on a 2004. I don't know what year they started it (2001?), but the wheels turn the drive shafts and front differential all the time, so there is no locking or unlocking. You get into 4WD by just engaging the transfer case.

But converting 2WD to 4WD is no simple matter. It would probably be cheaper to just go buy a used 4WD (and a lot less work).
