Methanol Prices

I had at one time sourced Methanol for $250 PER 55 Gallon Drum, but I just got quoted $75 for a 5 Gallon Bucket. This is insane, anyone else finding Methanol prices to be extremely high right now? If not where are you sourcing it from? Thanks in advance.

Man I'm glad I don't live where you do! My price for 55 gal drums.......$112.20. My price for 300 gal/totes.......$612. There must be a better place for you to try. My last batch [last week] was lower than a month ago.

Try buying it in 550 gallon totes. It should be easily available in just about any part of the country. Methanol is what oil and gas companies inject into nat gas pipelines to keep the gas from freezing up in the wintertime. (they strip it back out downstream) Tesoro, is who just about everyone offshore got their totes from. They buy in bulk (10,000 gal min.) and (tote) drum it for you.

Both seem like great ideas, but 550 gallons of Methanol would take some time to use. I don't want that sitting around for that long. I plan to use it as I make it? Anyone on the east coast have ideas on where to buy by the drum?

Are you pricing 99.9 % food grade methanol by chance? I know that it is quite more expensive than say what is used for racing fuel.

Nope, nothing food grade. Actually racing type is what I was quoted for.

Question

I understand that, whereas ethanol is "grain alcohol," methanol is "wood alcohol." I heard that moonshiners blinded unwitting suspects with it.

From what raw material is CH3OH (methanol) derived, these days? From dino?

Methanol is MEoH, and yes more than 90% of U.S. methanol is reformed from natural gas, which is a hydrocarbon.
