how hard to rebuild 4r100 transmission

My brother has an 01 F250 2wd and his transmission went out. He bought one from a junk yard that didnt require his old one back. I have a 99 F250. So what we wanted to do was rebuild this transmission as a spare. we plan on getting a book and a master rebuild kit. Im wondering how hard is it to do? Do we we need any special tools? We plan on changing out any hard part that is worn beyond specifications as long as we have a way to check it. The trans has 180K on it and was also wondering what is the chance that allot of hard parts are worn beyond specifiations. Any info will help. Thanks..

I've rebuilt a couple of auto's (not 4r100). I would suggest you befriend a local trans shop and they can help you. You will need special tools to remove and install bushings. Also an alignment tool to install the front cover. My best advise would be to let the tranny shop do these things. They will charge a small amount but it will be worth it. I learned the hard way. Other than that it's not too bad. You will need a lot of room to lay out the pieces and take notes when you tear it down. Hope this helps.

Awe come on it is not that bad, only lots of little sharp teeth to bite with

If you have a spare tranny to work on, that would be the best situation to work with. I didn't have the luxary of a spare. Would I do it again, most definately, especially after doing one. The biggest think you are going to want specialty tool wise (which can be built if you have the time) is a press tool to release the spring pressure off the snap ring. More importantly to put the snap ring back in. PM me if you want some pics and such, or for general questions. I purchased my rebuild kit from Transmission Exchange out of Portland, Oregon but depending on what you want, do a little research. Alto Red Eagle clutches and Kolene Steels are the best from the research I have done. Suncoast carries many of the parts you'd need as well.

EDIT: ATSG has probably the best service manuals out there, I suggest ordering one those, read it over then decide if you want to tackle the job or not.

Hey all,

I am new to this site and don't know if I posted this right or not. Hopefully I did. I have a early 99 superduty with the 7.3 and my transmission is leaking (dripping) from the front behind the plate. My clutch is also slipping. I've ordered a new clutch but don't know much about the leak. I think it is the front seal, is this hard to replace? Should I replace with ford seal? Truck has 93K on it, I've heard that some aftermarket seals for this tranny last alot longer than the stock ones. Any input would be appreciated, Thanks!
