Trans fluid ?

Hey guys I am thinking about replacing the fluid in my truck. I have a 97 F150 4.6 w/ the 4R70W trannsmission. I have read that you can use Mercon V in place of the Mercon on the older ones like mine. I am just a little leary of doing this since my truck has 183000mi and don't want to ruin the tranny. Will the Mercon V do any damage if it is all replaced?

Ford released a chart on which fluid you should use, and it clearly indicates that a 97 4R70W should use Mercon.

Many companies trans fluid is compliant to more than one standard. Many I saw when changing mine claimed to be Dex III/Merc and Merc V. Those I would say are safe to use. If its only claims to be one, I would definitly make sure that it is Merc and not Merc V.

Thanks for the info. In one of the tech articles on the site here it says it is safe to use Mercon V on older 4R70W's that were factory filled with Mercon. I noticed that my dipstick says use Mercon only.

Better safe than sorry is my thought. On some thread around here there was a post of the chart that I mentioned, can't seem to find it now though.
