Question about Dana 70 23 spline axles

I pulled an axle on the Dana 70 I have and found out that they are 23 spline units. I really don't want to upgrade to the 35 spline stuff since this rear all ready has a locked carrier with 4.88's. I'm going to be building a trail rider with a Dana 60 front and this Dana 70 rear. These are still the huge 1.5" diameter axles, just 23 spline. Dad had this axle in the rear of his 67 F250 Super Stock mud racer with a 500+ hp 390 and never broke it in the 10 years he raced. So I'm guessing that it will be strong enough for a trail rider. But, where do I find a spare axle or two? I've been searchin and haven't found one on the net. I believe it came out of a mid 60's Dodge. Anyone have any leads on where to find a couple good axles for it?

People get way too caught up in spline count. Sure, more splines are better but when the axle o.d. is the same its not that big of deal. No worries there. The only issue, as your discovering, is that the 23 spliners are the really old D70s, and you'll have to do plenty of digging to find them. At this point, I'd just run what you have and not sweat the spare, you may never break them. If in fact if you do down the road look at converting to the way more readily availible 35 spline at that time. Untill then, wheel it like you stole it

dont worry, they are stout....i doubt you will break a shaft....spares will be hard to come by, you can just find a set of 35 spline sidegears and 35 spline shafts and they should work(if they are the same lengths)
