351 to 302 Swap Balancing Questions

My 1986 F250 with C6 auto trans originally came with a 351. all 351's have a 28.2 oz imbalance. I want to install a 302 from a 1992 mustang, which has a 50 oz inbalance factor. My question is in regards to the flexplate. The 351 flexplate is 164 teeth and 28oz. I know mustangs with the AOD use 164 teeth and a 50oz flexplate. Will an AOD 50oz flexplate work with a C6? If not, what flexplate do I need? Thanks.

The AOD flexplate definately works with a C4. If you can confirm a c4 and c6 flexplate are interchangeable your good to go.

they are not interchangeable. the C6 was mated with that motor you just need to go to a parts house and buy new.
why the downsize. you are aware that a 302 in a heavy f250 would suck both in power and mpg. not to mention a mustang motor thats builds its power hi in the rpm range making it suck even more.

good luck though.

actually the truck has had a '68 302 in it for the past 4 years and it has not "sucked" in either power or gas mileage. in fact, it seems to do better than the original choked out with emissions 351. i tow and plow with it with no problems at all. works great for my purposes. the '68 motor spun a bearing, and one of the bores is all messed up, so i'm dropping in a spare engine i have. i am using the cam from an explorer, so it shouldn't "suck" as much as it would with the stock mustang cam - which i wouldn't call a high rpm horsepower builder anyway. but thanks for the "sucky" response.

In some applications the external balancing of the engine is also accomplished with harmonic balancer in addition to or instead of the flexplate/flywheel.

I've never heard of anyone doing a 351 to 302 'upgrade' either. There is a reason that Ford never offered a 302 in a heavy duty 3/4 ton truck.

Not true. My '96 f250 hd 2wd with a service body has a 302. It runs hard though. Maybe not for a 4wd?

the 2wd did come with the 302 but not the 4wd models.

thanks for giving a bit more info on your plans. had we gotten that to begin with it would help us help you better. the explorer cam isnt anything special either. good luck , all that matters is it works for you right.

really? knowing that i have been running a 68 302 for the last 4 years that recently spun a bearing and that i plan to run an explorer cam in 1992 mustang 302 would have helped you to answer whether a 50oz AOD flexplate is the same as a 50oz C6 flexplate? wow! i don't see quite how, but if you say so.....
