Turn signals

All of a sudden my turn signals do not work when i go to turn.

Heres what happened. towing a 22ft equiptment trailer, it must have a short on the trailer because it popped the fuse for the brake lights on both my truck and a GM. when i bought the truck i had the same fuse popped, but when i replaced it the turn signals worked. now they don't. i switched out the flashers and no change.

do ya'll have any ideas?

thanks

I'm thinking (I do that once in a while) that a wire is shorting out at times, but where.

Or a bad t/s switch.

hmm, but if it was shorting out wouldn't it pop the fuse?

would the t/s switch all of a sudden just go out like that?

You would think so.

Unless the fuse was the wrong size (amperage). Still, you would think it would pop the fuse.

Maybe a loose terminal/contact in the t/s switch?

I should knock on wood (and I will), but I never had an electrical problem on my 81 F150 except for a broken ground wire for the mixture control solenoid.

EDIT: What year truck?

Do your hazzards work?

hazzards do work, but they blink real fast.

its an 85. and it sat for 10 years in a barn, mice chewed about all the wiring and i have had a hell of a time with brakelights and turnsignals.

i did put a 20 amp in place of where the 15 went so i could get home. haven't changed it yet. maybe i goofed up.

blinking really fast means (to me) that youve got a burnt out bulb somewhere...

Replacing all the lights wouldnt be a bad idea

If mice went in there and chewed stuff, I'd say a rewire is in order.

Or at the very least, take out the harnesses and unwrap them, do an inspection on the wires, fix problem spots and rewrap.

Electrical tape is good to rewrap the harnesses after inspection of wires.

On problem areas such as chewed wires, and bare insulation, shrink tubing works well for individual wires not too badly damaged. Really bad wires would require a replacement section, or the whole wire.

I prefer soldering when repairing cut or damaged wires that require splicing.

Good Luck.

DT 466Man, you didn't mention mice.

Bet you 5 to 3 that's likely your problem.

Maybe some bare wire is intermittently rubbing against the metal and shorting.

Most likely a weekend job, after you get better.

As Nathane mentioned, try changing the bulbs first. You never now.

spring 04. since thats when i was actually able to drive it. it was the taillight harness. the interior wiring wasn't touched by mice. and from what i can see the headlights and whatnot weren't either. but something always bites you in the butt. and since this is TN, people not using turnsignals is not uncommon. but i'd rather have it fixed incase something bad happens.

If i get this President Truman report for rotc done, i'll probally go down to the garage and mess with it some more

Good luck on the Truman report and let us know what, if anything you find wrong (not with Truman, but the turn signals).

It's likely something real simple; just hidden.

i bet its the flasher, since i cannot confirm that any of them function properly. even the spares, they should work but i can't just go tearing apart my parents trucks to see if it may be the same flasher to tell. cheap as they are its probally my best bet to get new ones.

i looked at all the wiring and it all looks new. still plyable and bright colored not faded or broken up.

the fuses are all there and intact.

the report went good. it was on his decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. i'm big into ww2 as my grand father fought in it.

i'll get new flashers when i pick up the rering kit from napa this week

thanks

Try this:

It is for a 73 to 79 truck, but the wiring should be simular, but may have different wire colors.
