2003 f-150 swap for 2004 Ranger

Gas prices have me thinking about a smaller truck, I have a loaded '03 f150 7700 with 41000 miles and Ford dealer offered to swap a 2004 Ranger with 21000 miles on it, the Ranger is a nice truck and ALMOST as loaded as my f150.
The only reason I'm considering this is to save at the pump, the more I look around the internet the less impressed I am with the (4.0 L) as a fuel saver. Does the Ranger really average about 161/2 mpg? Hell my 150 gets me about 14 1/2 to 15 and it hardly seems worth it at those #'s.
What do the rest of you Ford loyalists think? Stick with my 150 ?

From what I've heard the 4L's don't do that great at the pumps, the only way to really save with a Ranger is to get a 4 cylinder but then of course your driving a 4 cylinder.

I agree with Brian.
I like the 4.0L SOHC but they aren't real easy on gas.

I had a 1996 Ranger Scab 4.0L (OHV) with a 5 speed, sold it and bought a 2003 F150 King Ranch Scab with the 5.4 and the auto, of course. Mileage penalty is about 2-3 mpg. Even with gas at $3.00 a gallon, I'll keep the ranch!

Thanks fella's, I did some extensive searching on the internet last night and the Ranger won't do what I wanted it to do (save gas). I Love (with a capitol L) my f150 and ggarrahan your real life testimony iced the cake for me.

My dad was looking into getting rid of his 98 ram and go to a ranger until he saw the gas milage numbers. He saw some numbers show that his ram could get better milage.

I just traded a 2000 Ford Ranger 4.0L Automatic 4x4 off Road Package with 4:10 gears to a 2004 F-150 Hertiage 4x4 with a 4.6L V-8 & improved my gas mileage, I only had 76,000 miles on the Ranger because it was so hard on gas.

Yeah if you wouldn't get much better gas mileage with a Ranger than an F-150 its not worth trading off your F-150

Yeah, I've been telling people if they want better gas on their trucks. Get a car, not to trade up for different truck. The gas mileage always are poor on trucks/suvs. I have a car to commute and I get to keep my "badass" truck.

I went from a `92 Ranger 3.0L V-6 with a 5 speed to my current `02 KR F-150 5.4L. The Ranger was driven hard, averaged 18 - 19 mpg around town, 36 mpg on the highway. My F-150 is 15 mpg around town, and 19 on the highway. I have taken quite a hit on the mileage with the new truck but, I can't see going back. I'll just keep the foot out of it.
