460 into 74' f100
I am planning on running a efi 460 in my 100. Its getting 60/10.25 axles, big tires and i plan on building a motor to turn it all. I have been researching and found out that the 93 and up I believe had the best flowing heads? Is this true? Which years are better and which are worse for this motor. I am thinking about a stroker kit, maybe a cam and some roller rockers. The efi 460s all have forged crank and rods from my understanding. Any other help would be great.

first off are you planning on running factory EFI? if not then you can't use the 87 or later heads they are different, and no the 93s are not the best flowing but they aren't the worst either. No 460s ever came from the factory with forged cranks, the only forged cranks used on 385 series engines were the boss 429 which is rare and expensive and has a short snout, and the 429 truck engines, and those have a different front snout also that can be turned down to the passenger car diameter but it's not cheap. With that said you have a couple of choices, one the factory iron cranks will support 600+ hp easily, or there is now forged cranks available although up to now I have only seen them in stroker cranks although I won't be suprised to see a stock stroke out soon, these should be able to withstand 1200hp easily enough. on the stroker cranks you can get them in cast, forged, and billet with prices reflecting the HP ability, the cast cranks will survive 700hp that they are rated for with ease, I have one running at around 900hp although at that level they won't last forever.

I dont plan on running a totally wild motor. Id like to stroke it and get some monster torque out of it tho . I was looking ta the 4.15 eagle crank and that sounds pretty nice to me. I am thinking of finding an f350 or whatever with a 460 efi and just grab everything I need. Could I then reprogram the computer to whatever moodifications I do to the motor?

the 4.15 crank is ok, but I really like the 4.3" stroke 6.8" rod combo I believe its a nice comprimise on stroke length and rod ratio, and provides more of a stroke for torque too. Also the pistons are readily available for the combo, and if you look that is actually the stroke that Ford uses in the 514 crate motor, althought they do use a stock rod which is just dumb in my opinion but hey what do I know.
