I have used a thin coat of a good grade rattle can in gloss black and it seemed to do just fine for me. I used plain old qwik drying Enamel.I paint the whole thing, Just don't Overload/ Over Do it, or plug up air flow thru the fins.

There was a radiator guy, whom has since passed away, that my dad used before I was born that told me that an unpainted radiator cooled more efficiently than a painted one.
Don't know if it's true, but he was the best around here.
I was once told that radiator shops use a special heat transfer paint that is very thin. I would think that paint is an insulator and would take a small amount of your capacity away but I think that most radiators are over sized enough to make it not noticable. I would agree with FBp and just put a light coat and don't over do it.
I have used the 'radiator paint' Eastwood Co. offers. It's acylic enamel, suppose to be thinner based, 'radiator black' comes in gloss or satin cost around $10 before shipping and handling. I have seen the product locally, not sure where, believe in auto paint store.
