I put a Flowmaster on my '89 2.9 without doing anything else, merely replaced the stock muffler with it. At idle it had a nice quiet rumble, but at highway speeds I couldn't even hear it. The cats and restrictive stock pipes muffled it too much.

Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

well...check out LMC Truck...for $200 u can get a true dual exhaust for the 4 banger in your ranger...i think it increases HP output by 18% too...it would prolly make the sound much better as well...sounds pricey but is a cool idea...even comes with black resonator tips

I have the 2.5L 4cylinder, which is the stroked bigger brother of yours. I have a SpinTech muffler. It has a low rumble, but, at when it's anywhere from 3500rpms-4200rpms, it sounds slightly ricey. Other than that, it doesn't sound like a 4banger.

have you ever though about calling around to all the exhuast shops and seeing if they have and take-off's from 5.0L or 4.6L mustangs? those should sound pretty healthy. What I would do to make a 4 banger sound meaner would be to go with mufflers that wont be overy loud, big diameter pipe 2.5"-3", and dual em from a y pipe at the collector.
reasons why:
1) the increased pipe size will alone add a deeper 'rumble'
2) the fact that there are 2 pipes will 'harmonize' with one another (like when 2 people talk or sing the same thing at the same time)
3) now that you have 2 big exhuast pipes already making your truck louder, you dont need a muffler designed to be loud, you need to tone it down with something to mellow it out and make for a smoother tone.

Ill search around stangnet, I remember a girl put a y-pipe where her cat was, and ran some duals back into spintech mufflers on her 4 banger 'stang...sounded good at idle, but high revs is where it lost the coolness...if youve ever heard a set of spintechs on a v8 you know how loud and raspy they are. Raspy doesnt work for 4 cylinders, need deep mellow tone

I have a 5 speed 4cyl. 2.3L. What I did was went to a local auto supply store, bought 2 10 foot pipes 2.5 dia, custom made the tips with stainless steal 3 inch, then customly made the exhaust. I had access to a pipe bender so that helped out alot. I just ran straight pipes with 4 bends out the back. I wanted a loud kind of noise and thats what i got. At idle it gives a little deep tone then everybody knows that a truck is come'n when im slamming through my gears. I was very pleased with the outcome and many people ask what I have for exhaust. Example: many people ask if i have flowmasters. All I did was run the pipes straight from the converter. Its nice. All finished it cost under $100 that included the reducers from the 2.5 inch pipe to 3 inch tips, hangers, and the 10 foot pipes. I really recommend making your tips out of stainless steel. I have seen way to many trucks that paid over $100 or close to it for chrome tips then down the road they rust through. With stainless steel you have no worries.
