We don't have what you call 1/2 or 3/4 ton out here. The motor was the 6354 I believe and Ive seen 100s and 250s with them, Ive also heard of a 350 with one but can't confirm this. The only tranny used was the 435 4 speed as far as I know. Numbers made varies, some say 200 some say 400, don't think they were a limited thing but due to the cost of rebuilding the perkins most of them have been converted back to petrol 6 or 8. They were quite successful in their day but they were slow and more expensive than the petrol motors.

I wish I had pictures to show you but as I said they are quite rare now and they didn't appear in the regular brochure but as a supplement which I unfortunately don't have, I'll try to get some documentary or photographic evidence of a factory built one but as far as being a good toy I would stick with my 351C, the old oilburners of that era are just a bit too slow.BTW the same engine was available in the F600 and above in a semi application as well as our oz built AT4 and D5N trucks.

Have just found this site and joined, so not familiar with eticit yet
I have a '75 F100 styleside I bought of my worker (ex mechanic).
It has a MWM (Mercedes with Mann) D229-4 (diesel) in it.
It was retro fitted in '93, BUT, the local Motores_Diesel business who did it back then (and remember), tell me the '79 forward F100's had this motor factory option installed.
It is 4cyl and 3.9 litre. It is a massive hunk of steel.
It was built in Brazil and get this, they were called F1,000.
They want to buy it off me for their collection but that is a no-go.
I need a starter motor, which they can supply, but it would cost more than a 2nd-hand 351 Cleveland.
They are slow but rather economical, and although a V8 sounds good, the thump from this thing isn't real bad on the sences.
The MWM D229-4 motor is still being made. The D229 motor comes as a 3,4,6 or 8 cyl.
We (worker and me) are doing it up in our quiet moments.
Cheers
Phillip

the brazil built F1000 was in fact a imported chassis made for the U.S. army soem were used for other uses but all were 5 ton trucks.the D229 was started in 1982 for use in small delivery trucks and stationary use .Not sure what MWM stands for but i do know for a fact it is owned by navistar. http://www.mwm.com.br/site/ing/index.asp

MWM stands for Mercedes with Mann. Now comes under Deutz (sp) apparantly. (I couldn't be 100% sure tho).
The Motores-Diesel business guy has access to the dealer website in Brazil, and the history section is pretty detailed, more-so than the one available on their public site.
This one of mine is a 1 tonner.
Amazing how things get mixed and matched in different parts of the world isn't it?
Talking of Army, we were joking the other day that this thing is painted in Brazilian Army Green when we were stripping it. The paint is the original, and comes off in big thick bits...no wonder there is no rust. Not a real nice green.
Re the starter motor....believe this....Ford Australia can get the part in for me, but about twice the price of the diesel fitter.
They also use D229 in varying sizes for boats/trawlers down here.
Pass on any other info you have F390gashog. I will appreciate it.
Cheers
Phillip

In Australia Ford factory fitted a Perkins 6.247 diesel motor in the '78 model ( I have one). Engine is the same as the Mazda T4100. not sure how many were made, some suggest 200, some say 400. Were not popular in the '70,s as everyone wanted the big V8,s. Details in the attachment
