oil shearing

oil shearing
I have an '06 F350 PSD with 7k on her. I had a Blackstone analysis done on my latest oil change, 3k on the oil. They said everything was fine, but the viscosity was a little light at 60.9 with 69 to 80 being "normal". They also said that this was due to shearing and all 6.0's do it reguardless of the type of oil used. Does this sound right, or should I think about switching from the Rotella 15-40 w that I am running now? Thanks, John

John, For comparison- The Blackstone on my 03 with 5,000 mile OCI was 65.8 with Mobil1 5w40. I was generally happy with the performance of the oil considering this OCI included 2,500 miles of towing a 7k load in the mountains during the heat of July and August last summer.
What % of fuel was listed in your report?

John, <.5% is great...That's the same reading as my report.
At the risk of starting an oil war you might want to consider a different oil... Perhaps the Rotella Synthetic 5W40 if you prefer Rotella brand or there are a myriad of other CI-4+ oils to choose from. Good Luck

I have done numerous Blackstone reports and now have 67,000 miles on my 2003 Excursion 6.0L.
All oils shear down in the 6.0L motor. This is due to the motor's use of the oil under high pressure to fire the injectors... and lube the motor. The motor uses motor oil like a hydrolic fluid... which is really hard on motor oils.
Call Blackstone and speak to Billy (I think that is his name)... but any of the techs are more than willing to speak to you about your report. All oils shear down from a 40 weight to a 30 weight. They will tell you that frequent oil and filter changes are key and 5,000 - 7,500 is just fine (I, and many others do 5,000) and sleep well at night. Dino and synthetic oils all do it... but look for an oil that is CI4+ rated as it was developed for EGR motors and reduced shearing.
I just started a new thread this evening about my good Blackstone report - see below.

Good luck and enjoy your truck... I am!!!
