Motiva Enterprises LLC's announcement - complete with an appearance by country music star and biodiesel fan Willie Nelson - addresses President Bush's call for more alternative fuels and marks an important step toward bringing the fuel to more drivers. Biodiesel remains unavailable in wide swaths of the country, though sales tripled last year. Proponents believe Motiva's pilot program, under which fuel already is being blended and loaded, will lead to more biodiesel pumps at gas stations.


Hear is the sad part of the same story:

Motiva, a partnership between Shell Oil Co. and Saudi Refining Inc why not an American owned company .

 

They are planning a new soy plant here in Indiana and a ethanol plant . On the down side I read in local paper that E85 was the same price as reg unleaded because of of more people useing E85.It was about .15 cents less a gal a month ago.

 

They just announced a new plant 40 miles from me that will produce 50,000,000 gal of ethanol and 5,000,000 gal of biodiesel per year.

It will use technology from OSU that extracts the corn oil first, then uses the leftover to ferment for the ethanol. This results in a more cost effective plant. OSU found that is cheaper to extract the oil first, the "mash" takes less energy to ferment if the oil is removed.

Now lets see folks complain about biofuels having a negative energy balance.

Now we have to prevent them from teaching the arabs how it works so they can make biofuel to sell us.

 

Doubt they could if they wanted to. When's the last time you saw a Saudi farmer standing in a bean field. Crude is the only thing they can grow.

 

Wrong; I worked in Saudy in the early 80's on a ag project. We were building 10,000 irrigation pivots then.............I wonder how many they have now?

Also ADM has contracted with the United Arab Emerates to build a 500,000 gallon per year plant.

Like it or not, Big Business has seen the writing on the wall.

Yah, they got BIO WILLLIE all over central texas. Were looking to buy some land up there and im hoping theres a truck stop that sells it!!

 

I liked the news about the 2fer shot -can't beat that. I suppose the waste from ethanol production might even have some residual value (brewers' yeast tablets?).

My concerns are that with big business becoming involved that the small people of this world will be regulated out. Yes, I think GM, Shell et al can certainly produce at a lower cost per unit than I ever can. I just don't think they'll stand idylly by if more and more people step off the grid and go homebrew (bio, WVO, home stills, propane from home installed tank etc). They don't want to give up market share. I see the possibility of local markets evolving in the current climate, responsive to local market products/wastes. That won't be the case with big business. Guess I'm a little wary of a big hurrah for top-down systems.

I see fabman's pictures and others who post up here. I drive by a mechanic that specialises in conversions. More people are doing it and on a greater scale. At somepoint The Man is gonna want to get paid.

Ok, on the subject of ethanol, being corn alcohol and everclear being corn alcohol, what is the difference in the two. Like is there nething in the E85 that is more harmful to u then E-clear? I wouldnt drink the stuff, but if it was the same im sure people would be buying it n drinking it instead of payin for bottles of everclear. Id think it would be highly toxic but then again its made on the same principals as moonshine!!!

 

the E85 is not made using copper piping but rather uses alum, or steel which puts impurities in it that will make you go blind amoung other things. This is how hte old stories of moonshiners going blind got started if the buy didn't use the right type of containers, and pipes and the ethonal plants aren't going to spend the extra money for copper for something that is not intended for human consumption.

 

E85 has 15% gasoline, so unless you like gasoline, it can't be drank, but that also is part of why it is there, to prevent personal consumption. Moonshine and ethanol are the same thing though, in pure form.

 

Ethanol and Everclear are one and the same C2-H5-OH.

If you buy ethanol for non consumption use it will be denatured to render it undrinkable, taxes ya know. Denaturing consists of adding a chemical to the ethanol that makes you very ill if you consume it.
You can't drink E85 because of the 15% gasoline it contains.

Everclear is not denatured and ATF will pay you a visit if you don't pay the taxes on it.
