Decoding a VIN on a 1976 F250?
Hi!
I just purchased a very sweet 1976 Ford F 250 California Truck...rust free! The problem is the guy who I bought it from also has a 1979, and when he was filling out the application for title when he bought it, he wrote down 1979...so the title says 1979. The VIN on the door says 1976 when I decoded it online it said that it went to a 1976. Also, the make date on the door sticker says it was made in 10/1975.
The problem that we have is that we need to prove to the highway patrol that it is a 1976...which it is. However, yesterday when I called there they put the VIN in their computer and said, "Yep, it's right...it goes to a 1979." I think the guy just wanted to avoid any work.
My question is, what type of proof can I take there to show them it's a 1976 other than the door sticker and door VIN? Where else is the VIN listed on a 1976 F250 other than the Door? Is there a good book that I can buy to show him that the VIN goes to a 1976 and not a 1979?
Thanks!!!
Ryan

Also, here is the rest of the info on the door tag:
133 W F252 DG4 A 22
07800 1976 72
I think the 133 is the wheelbase, right?
W is the color, which I think is Medium Green Glow
F252 is that it's a 250, is that right? What else?
DG4...I think that G is for Green interior, and 4 is that it is a regular cab...what else?
A is for transmission, right? It's a 4 speed
22 is for the axle, right? What else?
I don't know what the 07800 below is for...
1976 is for the year...you'd think I could just show this to the Highway patrol and get my new title...but it's not that easy I guess.
and what does 72 under the A mean?
THANKS AGAIN!

I can print you a copy of the Date codes from the shop manual showing date of manufacture and consecutive build number A57053, if that will convince them
07800 is the Gvwr of 7800 lbs.
Btw, No need for so many posts, All users have 60 minutes to EDIT their own posts to add or remove content.

Your VIN decodes like this:
Results for VIN#: F25MRA57053
Model Year: 76
Series: F250 - 4x2 Pickup
Engine: 8 Cyl, 390ci, 4bbl
Assembly Plant: San Jose
Transmission: 4 spd, Manual, New Process 435
Front Axle: No code selected
Rear Axle: 3.07 5300lb Dana 61
Call the DMV and ask them. They've always been helpfull when I've called.
1-800-777-0133. As soon as it connects, hit 0 (zero) at every prompt.
Hope this helps.

His main concern is the DMV, registering the truck.
He knows it a 76 but he needs to convince the DMV that it is a 76.
That can only be done by FOrd documentation not an online VIn decoder which could be wrong. and that Page is always wrong , the guy even mentions he may be wrong.
Here is what he needs from the Ford manual.

Actually the best thing you can do is take the truck to either the California Highway Patrol or the DMV and have it verified. I'm in the process of doing this on my '75 1-ton that's off the registration system.
In the end that's what they'll require anyway. I seriously doubt they'll take anyone's word for it.
