Yes, modern cats. combine the functions of the older two-stage cat setup. (Of course if you live in CA there is no guarantee the ****'s that run the CARB will pass it on visual inspection).

Most inspectors probably wouldn't know how many to look for unless they look it up somewhere. Depending on your state and inspector, it may or may not pass.
Stuff like this is why I've always stuck with non-smogged cars. No hippies making my life more complicated!
What about replacing the two stock cats with two high flow cats? They will still be a lot less restrictive than the stock ones, and as long as the O2 sensors are remounted back into the same general area as they were originaly there shouldn't be a problem..........
You'll have to have an O2 sensor on each side as well as a "H" pipe or "X" pipe linking the two sides of the engine together. Basically if you keep both sides the same from the block to the tips, I don't think you'll have a problem.
Plan is to cut off right in front of the first cat, and run duals from there back. Stock O2 sensor, its location, and the H-pipe there will remain factory. Sounds like it'd work though, thanks
What about running duals with one converter each, would that pass (in Texas)? That's the setup I was thinking about on mine.
As far as I know, if your rig came with single exhast, it must stay single exhast. Reason is the O2 sensor and the calibration of the computer reading it. If you take a single to dual the sensir is now reading half the levels.
