what years K-member will fit my truck
hey got my truck,
the K-member has had the middle section cut out the truck is a '71 f100 the two end pieces tha hook too the frame are still there. They seem to be bolted on.( I hope so ) I have a few thoughts about it. 1.weild a peace of plate too each side. 2.replace it I have afew '73-'78 if they will fit. 3. leave it out. 4. try too find the right one.
any addvise?

Your truck came with a three speed manual transmission. The crossmember for these trucks is riveted on. Trucks with the four speed and trucks with the automatic have bolted crossmembers. Get a good one from the junkyard, grind off the rivets on yours and bolt on the replacement. You need this crossmember! Fabbing up a replacement out of tubing or flat stock is also OKAY! When the PO installed an automatic in my truck they sawsall removed the center of the crossmember and welded it back after the job was done. I have a replacement all ready to go and will install it when I swap in my new engine.

Depending on how you count crossmembers your truck has several. The one you are dealing with supports the radius arms and keeps the front end in line. The next one back supports the transmission. There are two on the cab and a couple more in the frame under the bed. Actually the bumpers are technically crossmembers as well. You need the crossmember. You can use tubing to make up your own. I think it would be easier to get one from an automatic truck at the junk yard since these unbolt. Then cut the rivets on yours and bolt in the replacement. Cutting the rivets with the engine in the truck is a major PITA!
