Exhaust system question

Howdy folks. When I pull my tranny out, I'd like to do some work on the exhaust that I rigged up.

I cut the two pipes right in front of the cat, slid a piece of 2.5" pipe over the one, and then a piece of 2 1/8" flexible pipe over the other, since I couldn't get any kind of real pipe on it. Now I want to modify it some more...

I'm debating on if I should find a Y pipe from Summit (haven't had any luck so far) put a high flow cat on it, and then split it again so I can have my duals back. OR I would LOVE to keep the original duals, since I'm a big fan of that, and keep the cat's off.

I guess I could probably find a downpipe for the drivers side that comes down, and then across, and then I can modify it and put an elbow on it, and then run them both down the passenger side. I don't know though. What do you folks think?

PS. There are no emissions laws around here, and the setup I have now sounds nice and hasn't ever disturbed the local law enforcement.

The truck is a 95 F-150 4x4 with the 351 and E4OD. Standard cab, long bed with a 3" body lift (If that makes a difference.)

Keep the original duals... but get rid of the flex tube.. lol, my flex tube is near rusting out. If you want the y-Pipe, Bassani makes one, but its $$$.. its cheaper havin a shop do one.

I've got the same problem here. Before the tranny locked up, she started leaking.

I am currently looking on autopartswarehouse.com and they have the downpipes and cat's all connected for the F-150, but thats not what I want. Looking at the F-250 design, the pipes make their bends towards the back, and give you about 6 inches before it goes into a flat piece where a cat would bolt up. I'm thinking about getting that, and then cuttin the flat piece off the end, and then hook it up from there on back. I'll try to include the pictures that I'm talking about...

The F-150... http://replacement.autopartswarehous...20Pipe&dp=true

And then the F-250...

Make sure when you go to the sites, that you click on the pictures with the 5.8L configuration. With the F-150 one, it doesn't show the first cat that is slammed against the bends in the downpipes.

Maybe I'm way in over my head here? lol.

Go to a local muffler shop, have 'em make you an "H" pipe for your manifolds/headers, then have 'em run your pipes down the passenger side with two mufflers side-by-side. (That's the way mine is set up.) The shop can install a bung for your O2 sensor(s) in your pipes. For what it's worth, cats are required by federal law, even if your State doesn't have any emisions laws. Of course, the local guys don't generally like to enforce federal laws, but the law is the law. Good luck. Post some pics when you get it done.

Thanks for the reply Mike.

How much does it normally run to have them do a setup like this? I actually thought about getting two Hi-flow cats, just to make it legal, and then go on back from there with no mufflers. Think that is possible?

Actually I am looking into a set of the F-250 pipes (Over 8500 GVRW, Under 8500's are different), and then cuttin the pipes off of the flange. I need to know though if the pipes do merge right after the bend, and then continue back to the flange as a single pipe or not. If thats the case, then I'm sure I could fabricate something. If they don't merge and come into the flange as a double pipe unit, then I'm set to go.

I think I payed about $120 for my set up. The shop didn't have to make an 'H' pipe, though, since there was one basically there already. I'm not an expert, but I think the purpose of the H is to equalize some pressure between the two halves of the engine exhaust, but I don't know why this is important. My O2 sensor (I have an '87 F-150 with OBD 1, so only one sensor) is in the cross piece on the H, so I need it. You might want to check with someone to see if mufflers are required in your state. Apparently they are required in some, regardless of the noise after the cats. Of course, making all of these modifications is a violation of federal law. Supposedly, you are not permitted to change the basic set-up (cat or cats, location of the cat, number of exhaust pipes before the cat(s)). Whatever. Anyway, another option is a single hi-flo cat with 2 inlets and 2 outlets for your dual exhaust before and after the cat. Dynomax makes one of those, but the total air volume is less than with 2 hi-flo cats. I am thinking about running that set up when I put my cats back on. I'd find a local muffler shop (I like the small ones, not the chains) and tell them what you are wanting. If they are pretty cool, they will tell all that they can do and how much. If you supply the main parts (cats, mufflers), it shouldn't cost a whole lot for them to fabricate the pipes and install them. Good luck and have fun.

Mike
