Wheel Hub Change - Brake Caliper Removal Tricks?

I am (or I was ) changing my wheel hub as my bearing is shot. I unbolted the calipers, but they would not come off - they seemed to be hanging up on something and would only move about an inch or so before hitting the obstruction.

I believe that the obstruction is somewhere near the centre of the calipers as I can move either end further than I can move the whole unit (like a fulcrum).

Is there a step that I am missing? I tried a search, but did not come across this issue in any threads that came up. From the threads that I read it appears that anyone who had an issue generally had fun trying to pop off the hub and/or rotors, so I am expecting further joys down the road.

... before I forget, it's a '99 F150 ext cab 4x4 w/ rear abs.

TIA for any help!

If there is a a rust ridge on the rotor is can cause the pads to hang up when trying to remove the caliper. Try prying the caliper so it pushes the pistons back in a bit so the pads can go past the ridge.

Yep, I've used a mallet to get them off before. You can try to push the brake pad/piston in also, that'll give you the room you need.

I will check that out as soon as I get home from work today.

A mallet? I had read about using one for the hub assembly, but did not want to risk it for the caliper ..... I will take down any ridge and maybe give it a few little whacks if it sticks after that.

Thanks fellas!

One more question .... is there a seal at the back that needs changing once the hub assembly comes off?

Thanks!

yes, the axle- CV joint unit slips thru a seal. The seal is mounted to the back side of the bearing/ hub unit.
