Ticking when cold on 99 2.5L

My 99 Ranger's 2.5L started ticking from the top of engine when cold. I bought the truck in December with 76K on it and the ford Dealer changed the oil with North Land Lubricants 5w30. I put a couple thousand miles on and changed it with TropArtic 5w30 syn blend and after about a day of driving I noticed when cold that it would tick in the 1200-1500rpm range. Once the engine warms up it goes away. I ran that oil 1000 miles and changed it to Motorcraft 5w20 thinking it would flush out any gunk. Drove it 3200 miles and noise still there. I change it again with the MC 5w20 and noise is still there yet.

I have had 5 cars and trucks with this engine over the years since 1978 and never had one tick. Did the dealer put something in it to shut it up? or did something happen when I changed the oil the first time? I also cut open the filter from the last oil change and it was very clean, no gunk in it.

I am thinking of going to a high mile oil or Castrol startup to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any ideas

Most likely you have a hydraulic lifter that is bleeding down. Once everything warms up it would be fine. When you raise the rpms, you will get more pressure to the lifters.

I am confused as to why it started a day and about 50 miles after I changed the oil for the first time? Also it does not start ticking right away at start, it starts ticking about 30 seconds to one min. after the truck is started and on the move.
