rear axle width on a 1/2 ton

I was wondering why my rear axle is like 5" narrower than the front width? has it been changed or is this how they were built? it looks funny if you look straight from the back and see half of the front tire hanging out on each side! oh and yes my wheels are all the same, stock ford 15" wheels.

Hi Billy, that’s the way they are. It’s more pronounced with the 9 incher than the Dana. They widened the rear track width in’73. My alum. wheels on the rear have enough offset to make it wider than the front now.

There was a thread about this earlier this year. Basically Ford did it so that when offroading the front and rear tires didn't go through the same rut. "Supposedly" to help avoid getting stuck. IMHO it looks like crap.
