that connector is a pain to get to and it'd be easier for me to just stick a test prong on the wire from behind. do you think that should do just the same? seems to me shorting it is shorting it.
Thanks!
It also has to be open for the other side of the test.
open and then short
I see. So then this should work, selector switch in the middle making no contact or on rear as my rear sending unit doesn't complete a circuit anyhow. That way I can keep from taking that plug back off. One of the retaining clips inside the plug broke and I have to mash one of the cables in after the fact. As brittle as this old stuff is, the least I can flex/strain it the better I'm finding out.
Thanks again Bill! Who knows, I may just pull the damn thing off and do it right anyhow.
Would you be kind enough to tell me how the 6 port on a 1984 f-250 4wd 6.9l diesel is switched? Mostly what I need to know how the oem tank selector switch is wired, as I want to use it to activate an inline 12v heater when I select my rear tank.
Thanks!

Please, when asking questions, list all the pertinent details: year, series, 2WD/4WD, engine size, etc.
Profile sez 1986: 1985/86 F150/350's have one or the other of the following:
E5TZ9189A .. Fuel Tank Selector Valve-3 Ports / Marked: E57B-9F271-AA.
or...
E5TZ9189B .. Fuel Tank Selector Valve-6 Ports / Marked: E57B-9F271-BA or E67B-9F271-AA.
Both these parts are known to fail without notice, and both are still available from Ford.
Normally I'd list the MSRP & the FTE member net prices, but FTEpartsguy.com's website is down for maintainance.

on page 2 of this post Bill has a nice image of how that selector works schematically. Basically if the switch is up, it uses the middle 2 and bottom 2 connections, and in the down it uses the middle 2 and top 2 connections if I recall correctly. Bill's draw up also has the wire colors marked so everything should become clear when you look at that plug and the wire colors.
I have an '88 F-30 dump w/dual tanks,7.5 EFI/460 and I am experiencing rough running mid-range under a load, hard starting when hot, check engine light coming on etc.etc. I have had the truck at the dealer timing set/checked,diagnosed and the cat checked out un-restricted. So my question is (before I risk any damage opening this fuel selector vave up) has anyone ever found a filter in one of these canisters?
What are the indications of a bad valve? Lately I can't start the truck because of fuel starvation and it seems that all of the fuel from the forward tank has been siphoned into the rear tank. I have been told that it could be either the tank selector valve (reservoir) or that one of the low pressure fuel pumps in the tank(s) are bad.
I have a 1986 F250 quad cab 6.9L diesel with dual tanks.
Powersmokes have in tank pumps, you don't. you have an FSV and a mechanical lift pump on the engine block.
Now, sounds like you have an FSV that has failed much like mine did. Meaning it's pulling fuel from one tank and returning it to the other. You can solve this by bypassing your FSV and direct piping to one or the other with brass hose barbs. Or you can drop the money needed for a replacement FSV. Fairly sure your FSV has failed mate.

It is indeed fuel injected, I replaced it once not knowing I could change the filter in it, this time the anti siphon valve pulled through it oring and is unreachable inside its "bore". The number on this one is F1TA-9B263-BA.
Stupidly I threw the original one away. I was interested in the discount for members from sponsored sites, as my local is over 100 bucks.
The F1TA-9B263-BA is a drawing number and not a part number.
Subford, you are very knowledgeable on ford parts, the number you gave me F1UZ9263B is about $70 online, while another part number I see for this application E5TZ9189B is about $150 online, is there a functional difference between the two? I know that my original had a filter inside of it, can that be the difference?
