I have a '98 explorer XLT that has a factory installed security system with remote door locks. A while ago, the remote stopped working. I thought it was just a dead battery in the remote. Replaced it but it's still not working. I don't hear a "chirp" even when I use the keypad to open the locked doors.

I've checked the fuses. Everything looks ok. Anyone have any ideas what else could be going on?

The remote FOB may be bad or you need to reprogram the remote. Not sure about the chirping though. The only thing I could think of is that the option got turned off or reprogrammed somehow.

 

Is there a thread on the site that you know of that describes how to do this or at least remove it as a possibility?

 

Not sure about programming the chirping. I htink you'd have to get a hold of the owner's manual for the actual security system. But reprogramming remotes should be in the vehicle owner's manual (available here online: http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdi...&menuIndex1=49). Usually, it's turning the key on and off a few times and then pressing a button on the remote.
