It is on the back of the intake manifold close to the fire wall more towards the passenger side. It is a tight fit.

It's teed off with something else and apparently very easy to break a plastic fitting so be careful.

If you have the plastic SOHC cover, you may have to take it off, though not totally necessary (used to have an 01). As Bulldog mentioned, really tight fit. I think I missed it the first few times.

ledbetter, there is something right behind the passanger side valve cover, has two hoses coming from intake housing going to it. with rubber hose going down towards bell housing from what I can see. But nothing going into valve cover like I'm used to seeing on all other PCV. Could that be it, also has a blue plastic housing doesn't look like the part I have.

Sorry I can't be more help. Just relying on memory. I don't have my explorer anymore. But I do remember two hoses going to it via a tee connector that jharger mentioned...

heck55, what you are describing is it, the tee and then the ruber hose running down. be careful when you pull the pcv out the lines can crack easy.

I'm trying to find the PCV as well on my '98 Explorer SOHC. I thought I found it, but the piece just below the T that I found behind the passenger side of the intake plenum doesn't look like my replacement valve. The base of what I found, although I can hardly see it due to location, is bigger and seems to be glued into the rubber line. Is there anywhere I could find a photo or diagram of where this is supposed to be?

On my '97 Explorer Sport the PCV is in the driver side valve cover back towards the firewall. I had to use a shop light in order to find it, in fact it took me more time to find the PCV then it did to change it.
