Fans of the 4.9 IL

When I went looking for my truck I sought out the 4.9 6....I did so because after being around Ford products it was my impression that it is a very reliable almost bullet proof motor ..I believe a number of years ago a company who did some research rated it as the longest lasting truck engine on the market something around 260,000 miles....unless you need something larger to haul bigger loads it just makes for a great engine.....anyone with any thoughts....agree ?....Disagree...?

Iv'e had 4 of them in my life, and hands down the best all around truck engine ford motor co ever made, thats one engine I truely miss. I wish one wouid fit in my 04 ranger, I rate it up there with a flathead v-8, as a ford icon, MAY LONG LIVE THE 300, and it will!

I agree people who knock them I think in some-ways misunderstand the purpose of it....If want to use your truck as a truck than its great....If you are buying it to cruise the city streets with than you will not be happy...but for longevity and ease of repair I think it is tough to beat....

I love there lowend torque, all the ones Iv'e had were manual trans, and that makes for an awesome combination. Your right, there a man's truck, not much of a street cruiser, but man, can you work um!

A kid I kow had a F-150 with the 300 six an try as he might he never blew that motor. The way he drove made you wonder how anything held together. He was a Chevy lover but after that experience he was a die hard Ford guy forever. An to this day he still drives a Ford truck. I talked to him awhile back an said that motor should have never held up the way he treated it. Hes so loyal that he has a lighted blueoval embiem on one wall in his house.

Compared to the 1993 Honda Civic Si I had before I got my truck, I think the 300 is great. Much simpler, less to go wrong, not as finicky, easier to work on, parts are cheaper. And, it's got TORQUE - something my Honda would never have. To borrow a phrase, this truck is more "like a rock" than anything else I know. 201,000 and going strong.

They're pretty easy and fun to build up too. I just put the EFI exhaust manifolds on my truck last week and that motor really woke up! Can't wait until I can afford an Offy and a 4 bbl.

What kind of performance increase can you expect with a 4 bbl and a new manifold? There was a '61 F100 4x4 longbed on eBay last week that the owner put a 300 six in with a Holley 4bbl and Offy (I think) manifold. He also installed PS and PB himself. It was a CLEAN looking truck, I'm suprised it didn't sell at his $3500 reserve.

For the record, I have a '66 F250 with a 300 six (unknown miles), and a '97 F150 with a 4.6L with 256,000 untouched, original miles. THAT is an engine that can rival the 300 six for durability. Ask any cop in a Crown Victoria.

The 4.6 is also a great motor that really has a long life span ... internally it is machined so that it distributes heat very well and does not show a lot of internal wear....I am unsure of how easy it is to work on....nor does it have the low end of il6.....but for certain applications it is a very very good motor.

The 4.9 is a good truck motor. I regularly haul firewood with it a pull my snowmachine in the back, its a good little motor. I like the 4.6 as well, but i don't think it would stand up as well to the 300 with some real truck pulling abuse. It can take the revs higher than the 300, and its definetly a better street cruiser.

We had our first mud bog of the year this past weekend, oh what a time! I was the 2nd truck to tackle the bog, I creeped down into it dropped it into low range/3rd gear and gave er hell. The ol six came to life slingin mud and water everywhere, had a few close calls (almost gettin stuck) going through; I'd just mash the skinny pedal and she'd keep on moving. We eventually got bored with that and headed north for some trail riding. One guy up there in a 98 Dodge extended cab shortbox 1500 4x4 got bured really deep in a mud pit. Everyone tried pullin on him they either didn't have the power or enough weight to budge him. My one buddy in a 79 F150 on 38" swampers broke his 460 trying to get him out. By now I'm sure you can guess who got him out! Mmm Hmm I knew it!

Are you serious? Some guy with a 460 couldn't do it, but your 300 could? That 460 has more HP AND torque than your 300, so what are you running, AG tires or something?

I miss Michigan, grew up there, went to many Coast Guard Festivals in GH.

I call BS on that one, with all things being equal, a 300 is an awesome engine, but to out pull a 460, he must of broke from the get go!
