I have to replace the door latch assembly on a 2001 explorer driver side door because the spring broke and you can't open the door from the outside. Does anyone know where I can find a diagram or instructions on replacing this? I know there are a couple rods that have to be disconnected and I figured if I had a diagram it would be easier. Should I pick up a repair manual or does anyone have an experience with this they can share?

I know this is an old thread but I have the same question

 

Here is the R&R procedure for a '96 Ex from the Ford factory manual (on DVD). I'd be surprised if the '01 models differered much or at all from the '96.

There are some diagrams on the DVD. If you send me a PM with your email address, I'll send them to you.

Removal

Remove the front door trim panel and watershield from the front door. Refer to Section 01-05A .

Remove front door latch remote control and link (21818). Disconnect front door latch actuating rod. Disconnect front door latch control cylinder rod (22134) from lock cylinder.

Disconnect front door latch push button rod (21852) and front door latch control cylinder rod from front door latch (21812).

Remove the front door latch attaching screws. Remove the front door latch from the front door.

Installation

NOTE: Remote control rod and lock cylinder rod should be attached to front door latch before front door latch installation.


Install the rod retaining clips in the newfront door latch.

Position the front door latch in the front door. Install the latch attaching screws. Tighten screws to 4-8 Nm (36-70 lb-in).

Connect the rods to the handle, lock cylinder and remote control.

Connect handle rod and push button rod to front door latch. Check the operation of the front door latch.

Install the watershield and front door trim panel on the door. Refer to Section 01-05A .
