5.4 oil usage
#4
My 2000 has 55k on it and the last time I changed oil I noticed that only about 4 qts drained. Finished the changed and kept checking. Looses a quart in about 2k miles. I swithched to a full syntheticabout a year ago and it immediately ended a lifter noise. Don't know why the synthetic should burn up any quicker than dino oil. Maybe I'll switch back and see what happens.

always replace PCV every 2 years its only a couple of bucks. and watch for fitting on back of engine its subject to oil and heat. fitting deteriorates quickly: poor design and PCV hose assy cost 50 bucks and good luck finding amechanic that can reach back behind supercharger and get to fitting on lower back engine.

I now use for almost 20k mi Mobil 7500 5w-20 and have been going 7500 mi between changes. So, now I started looking at my dipstick more often.

If so, I'd say the useage is about right considering every else equal.
FWIW, I'd lay down good money that switching back to MC 5w20 would help out on the oil consumption, but this is just based on my personal observations.

5.4 uses quite a bit
My 5.4 (99 F250 auto) has used about a quart per 1000-1500 miles since new. If you only use 1 per 2000 I think that's doing pretty good. It seems that anything less than 3 qts consumed between oil changes is acceptable depending on who you ask. I don't like having to check and add it so much but the alternative seems to be a new truck and a lotta luck.
I used Penn 5-30 for years, lately trying MC 5w-20. Waiting for results now. I may look at the PCV if nothing changes.

For those of you who have replaced the pcv valve and noticed a difference, was the replacement one different from the oem? And also was the oem one stuck? I just replaced mine because of oil consumption and the replacement had a much lighter weight inside it. The oem one was still free so I don't know if it will make a difference or not yet.
