help with aftermarket parts
I have a 2000 V10 X, I dont want to saell it but I want to do some mods to improve my gas mileage. The truck is stock right now. My my wife said she wants to step on the gas and go like everyone else does. I get after her because of the cost of gas. I want to do headers and exhaust and a chip. What ever will help. A lift is going on it eventually as well. So any help with what has worked for anybody out there would be great. There is so much to choose from I want what is going to improve my truck. I thought about going with a diesel but I would have to shell oput 5-6,000.00 to9 get one and it just does not seem cost effective at this time for me. Thanks guys. X's rule!

First thing to ask is what are currently averaging city and highway?
The V10 is already quite fuel efficient for an engine it's size and compared to it's predecessors. Things that do (and sometimes don't) help with mileage are intakes, mufflers, Mass air sensors, chips, tuners, and driving habits.
Intakes will allow more air into the engine allowing for a better spark and more power. But sometimes you need to change the mass airflow sensor to accommodate and properly measure the larger amount of air coming into the engine. K&N, AFE, and Volant are just a few of the companies that make a good intake system. From what I've read, mufflers do help as well as give your truck more growl. One of the more popular mufflers are the flowmaster. But regardless of gas or diesel application, the Aeroturbine muffler seems best to suit the job. The AT acts as a conical jet engine that sucks exahust away from the engine and forces it out even faster. I have one on my PSD X and it made a world of difference with mileage and overall power. (I'm actually looking into one for my '04 Mustang) Another user on this forum installed the AT muffler on his V10 Excursion and loves it. You can hear it here Just type in "Ford", from the drop down menu pick "SUV" then select "audio clips" from the bottom menu. (btw that's acutally his) It'll be the only one that shows up. You probably noticed I didn't mention anything about changing the whole exhuast system out. The reason is that (again) from what I've read, when the stock system is removed or changed, it sometimes has adverse effects. Such as: lower mileage, lower power and so on. But depending on what you do, it may help. Reputable chip and tuner companies include: Hypetech, Diablo, SCT, and Superchips to name a few. They all smooth and readjust the fuel and timing curve for maximum power and efficency. Some do better than others, it's just a matter of making a few phone calls and seeing who best suits your needs. Heres a dyno chart for the Hypertech tuner. Use can use this as a reference point for your research. (i.e actual rear wheel hp) As far as driving habits, slow, but smooth acceleration always help. If you maintain 45-50 mph around town and 65-70 mph on the freeway you should see some respectable mileage. While some of these mods may help, some of them also hurt mileage because of the nature of the V10. You may want to repost this thread in the V10 Forum, you'll definately get more answers there. Until then, I hope this has been helpful. Take Care.

I owned a V10 2000 for 5 years. Use Mobil 1, K&N air filter, keep stock size tires and go easy on the gas. Beyond that not much else will improve it. I did switch to a 7.3L last year, an 03 and ya the initial investment aint cheap, but I like it and plan on keeping it awhile. The lift will negate any improvement.
