a/c blowing hot

my friends 98 F150 4.6L 4X4 is blowing hot with the a/c on. the compressor is only kicking on for about 2 seconds then it turns off for about 4 seconds and repeats. is this a bad compressor or is it only a bad sensor somewhere.

oh yea, it is not an auto a/c unit like the lariats.
thanks in advance

probably low on freon. pump sucks the low side pressure too low, then the compressor cuts out. a couple gauges will narrow it down real quick. stop buy the shop.

Compressor short-cycling is almost always due to low refrigerant level - no freon has been used in 12 years or so in new trucks.

Cans of R-134a cost about $8-10 at Wal-mart last time I looked. I'd throw one can in there and see what happens if yu don't have guages.
